The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Works 3.0
  • Microsoft Works 3.0a
  • Microsoft Works 3.0b

This article was previously published under Q120399

SYMPTOMS

Works allows you to delete or insert fields in List view when Protect Form is turned on. Even though you can insert a field in List view, you cannot create a field name. Deleting fields in List view removes them from the Form view. This is not expected behavior. Using Protect Form should prevent any changes from being made in list view or form view.

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Works version 3.0, 3.0a, 3.0b for Windows. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

This problem does not occur in Works version 4.0, 4.5 and 4.5a for Windows 95.In Works 4.0, 4.5, and 4.5a, protecting the form is done in the Form Design View and is not available in Form view.

Steps to Reproduce Behavior

NOTE: To reproduce this behavior, you have to select the entire column when inserting or deleting the field. Having one cell selected works as expected.
  1. Create a new database in Works.
  2. Create three fields in Form view.
  3. From the Format menu, choose Protection.
  4. In the Protection box, select Protect Form and choose OK.
  5. From the View menu, choose List.
  6. Click the field name so the entire column is highlighted.
  7. From the Insert menu, choose Record/Field.

Result: A blank column is inserted in the List view, but Field Name is unavailable (dimmed) in the Edit menu.

Expected result: You should not be able to add this field.
  8. Click the field name for a different field so the entire column is highlighted.
  9. From the Insert menu, choose Delete Record/Field.
  10. From the View menu, select Form.
Result: The field has been deleted.

Expected Result: You should not be able to insert or delete fields with Protect Form on.
