Works Error: Can't Find or Change Error If File Open in MS Word (120398)

SYMPTOMS

If you attempt to open a file in Works that is already open in Word, you may receive one of the following error messages:
Cannot change: file read-only. <file name>

-or-

Cannot find file or file already open. <file name>

-or-

Cannot change the document <file name>. The document is read-only or is open by another user or application. To change this file save it with a different filename.

-or-

Cannot access the document <Filename>. The document may be open or it may be a read-only document.

RESOLUTION

You cannot open a file in Works for Windows that is currently open in Word for Windows. If you attempt to open a currently open Word file in Works, you receive the error messages listed at the top of this article, and the file does not open.

To work around this issue, avoid opening files in Works that are currently open in Word.

MORE INFORMATION

If you have an open Read-only document in Word for Windows, and then attempt to open this file in Works for Windows, version 3.0, you will receive the error: "Cannot change: file read-only. <Filename>", but the file will open. Works version 4.0, 4.5 or 4.5a will not open the file.
