Works: Problems Setting Tabs on Ruler When Using Centimeters (119877)

SYMPTOMS

Default tabs and inserted tabs are not correct if the Country and Keyboard settings are set to a foreign country in the International section of Control Panel. Most foreign countries use the metric system for measurements and, when this is the case, Works for Windows does not convert the centimeter measurement properly.

When using the metric measurement, the default tab setting in Works for Windows is set to 1.3cm. However, when you measure the distance between the tab stops on the ruler, they are not 1.3 cm apart. Also, when you insert tab stops on the ruler with the mouse, the tabs do not insert where expected.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Works version 3.0 for Windows. This problem was corrected in Works versions 3.0a and 3.0b for Windows.

WORKAROUND

There are three ways to avoid this problem. They are:
  1. From the Format menu, select Tabs. Enter the tab stop positions you want to use and choose OK.
  2. If you want to continue using the mouse to set tabs, select another measurement setting (for example, Inches, Points, or Pica) by choosing Options from the Tools menu. After choosing OK, immediately return to the Options dialog and switch the measurement setting back to Centimeters. Works will then insert the tab stops correctly. You will have to follow this procedure each time you open Works for Windows.
  3. Change the Country and Keyboard Layout settings, in the International section of Control Panel, to United States as follows:

    1. In the Control Panel window, choose the International icon.
    2. In the Country box, select United States.
    3. In the Keyboard box, select US.
    4. Choose OK and close the Control Panel.
    5. Start Microsoft Works, and create or open a Word Processor document.
    6. From the Tools menu, choose Options.
    7. Set Units to Centimeters, and choose OK.
The tab stops will now insert correctly when you use the mouse.
