SYMPTOMS

When your document contains multiple sections and you create a header or footer in a subsequent section, Word automatically replaces any previous header or footer in addition to affecting subsequent sections.

This functionality is different than previous versions of Word for the Macintosh, where adding a header or footer to a subsequent section automatically disconnected it from the previous section.

CAUSE

All headers and footers are connected by default, so a change in one is reflected in all others. This behavior is by design in Word.

RESOLUTION

To create a header or footer that does not replace previous headers or footers, follow these steps:

  1. Position the insertion point in the section you want to change.
  2. On the View menu, click Header And Footer.
  3. Click the Same As Previous button on the Header And Footer toolbar to deactivate (turn off) this setting.

NOTE: This option disconnects the section from previous sections but does not disconnect it from subsequent sections.
