MORE INFORMATION

Workgroup Error Message

When the workgroup functionality is not working correctly, you may receive the following error message in Microsoft Mail:
   Microsoft Project 4.0 Workgroup messaging is not installed properly on
   this machine. Please look at the manual! <<File attachment:
   {drive:\directory}\MSPJ.MPM>>

When you receive this error message, you should verify that the Win.ini and the Msmail.ini files contain the necessary entries, and that the supporting files are in the correct locations. (To verify this information, see the following sections of this article.)

You also receive this error message if Microsoft Mail is running when you run the Wgsetup.exe program. To make sure that Microsoft Mail recognizes the changes made to the Win.ini and the Msmail.ini files, after you run the Wgsetup.exe program, quit Microsoft Mail, and quit Microsoft Windows. Then, start both programs again.

Necessary Win.ini Entries

For Microsoft Project Workgroup Messaging to be properly installed, the following line must be present in the [Mail] section of the Win.ini file:
   MAPI=1

If this line is not present, any of the following problems may occur:

  • Supporting files will not be installed in your Windows directory and System subdirectory.
  • The Workgroup menu item on the Tools menu (in Microsoft Project) is unavailable.
  • The Send and Add Routing Slip options (located on the File menu) is unavailable.

Necessary Msmail.ini Entries

When you install Microsoft Project or run the Wgsetup.exe program, a new line is added to the Msmail.ini file (this file is located in the Windows directory). The new line should be in the [Custom Messages] section and should contain the information in the following example
   IPM.Microsoft Project.Workgroup Mail=3.0
   ;;;;appexec.dll;openmail.exe <PARAMBLK>;1111200000000000;;;;

where the information is entered on one single line. This information should be formatted as follows:

  • Two spaces after 3.0 and before the ;;;;
  • One space after openmail.exe and before <PARAMBLK>
  • One space between Microsoft and Project
  • One space between Workgroup and Mail
If this line is not present in the Msmail.ini file, Microsoft Mail cannot open the mail message properly, and you receive the error message mentioned earlier.

Supporting Files and Their Locations

Microsoft Project Workgroup Messaging requires that the following files be installed on your system:
   File                        Location
   -------------------------------------------

   Anibuton.vbx                Windows\System
   Appexec.dll                 Windows\System
   Grid.vbx                    Windows\System
   Msmapi.vbx                  Windows\System
   Openmail.exe                Windows
   Splus.dll                   Windows\System
   Threed.vbx                  Windows\System
   Vbrun300.dll                Windows\System

Microsoft Project Setup installs these files automatically if the MAPI=1 line is in the Win.ini file.

NOTE: You can also install these files by running the Wgsetup.exe program from Disk 1 of the Microsoft Project disk set. If you run Wgsetup.exe, restart Windows afterwards to prevent the "Unable to load custom control dll Anibuton.vbx" error message from occurring.

If these .VBX or .DLL files are located in your Windows directory, move them to your Windows\System directory and then restart Windows.
