Transferring Files from Works for Windows to Foxpro

FoxPro cannot open Works for Windows database (*.WDB) files directly. They must first be saved in the dBASE IV file format (*.DBF), using the following steps:

  1. Open the database document you want to transfer to FoxPro in Works.
  2. From the File menu, click Save As.
  3. From the Save File As Type (Works 2.0 or 3.0) or Save As Type (Works 4.0, 4.5 or 4.5a) drop-down list, click dBASE IV.

    NOTE: The file extension should change to DBF.
  4. Select the directory in which you want to put the new file.
  5. Click OK (Works 2.0 or 3.0) or Save (Works 4.0, 4.5 or 4.5a).
You can now open the database file in FoxPro using the following steps:

  1. From the FoxPro File menu, click Open.
  2. Select the file saved in the steps above and click OK.
The file will now be open in FoxPro.

Transferring Files from FoxPro to Works for Windows

Works for Windows cannot open FoxPro database (*.DBF) files that contain memo fields directly. They must first be saved in comma or tab-delimited text file format (*.TXT) using the following steps:

  1. Open the database document you want to transfer to Works in FoxPro.
  2. From the Database menu, click Copy To.
  3. From the File Type box, click Delimited By Comma.
  4. Type a filename with a .TXT extension in the Name box.
  5. Select the directory in which you want to put the new file.
  6. Click OK.
You can now open the database file in Works using the following steps:

  1. From the File menu in Works, click Open Existing File (Works 2.0 or 3.0) or Open (Works 4.0, 4.5, or 4.5a).
  2. From the List Files Of Type (Works 2.0 or 3.0) or Files Of Type (Works 4.0, 4.5, or 4.5a) list, select Text (*.txt).
  3. Select the file saved in the steps above and click OK (Works 2.0 or 3.0) or Open (Works 4.0, 4.5, or 4.5a).
  4. In the Open File As dialog box, click Database.
The file will now be open in Works. You can save the file into Works database format (*.WDB) if you want to do so.
