SYMPTOMS

When you print custom paper sizes using Microsoft Word, the document is printed in the wrong location on the paper.

CAUSE

The envelope printing options are not set correctly.

Word determines where to print the information on a custom paper size by using the envelope feed options. The envelope feed options not only affect how envelopes are printed, but also how custom size documents are printed.

In Word 2.0, these options are set using printer heuristics. In Word 6.0 and later, printer heuristics are set by choosing the envelope feed options in the Printing Options dialog box for envelopes.

In most cases, if the envelope printing options are set correctly for envelopes, custom paper sizes will also print correctly. If custom paper sizes are printing too far to the left or right, some adjustments may be necessary.

To Troubleshoot Printing Problems with Custom Paper Sizes

  1. Check the paper source to make sure it is correct:
    1. From the File menu, choose Page Setup.
    2. Select the Paper Source tab.
    3. Set the paper source to Manual so that the paper will be pulled from the manual feed slot on the printer.
  2. Make sure the Envelope Printing Options are correctly set for the feed method used by the printer:
    1. On the Tools Menu, click Envelopes And Labels.
    2. Select the Envelopes tab.
    3. Choose the Options button.
    4. Select the Printing Options tab.
    5. Select the feed method that matches the way the printer's manual feed slot works.
    6. Choose OK.
    7. Click the Cancel button to return to your document.
The custom paper size should now print correctly.

NOTE: If the Envelope Feed icon does not match the way the printer physically handles custom paper sizes, the results may be unpredictable. In most cases, the envelope feed icon cannot be used to force the printer to print custom paper sizes differently than the printer (that is, the manual feed slot) is designed to. This may work on some printers, but it is very dependent on the hardware design of the printer, and correct results can not be guaranteed.
