SUMMARY
This article discusses three problems with using the Cut and Undo
Cut commands with formatted information from a Works for Windows
spreadsheet.
The first two problems listed only occur with a new spreadsheet that
does not contain any data. Problem 3 is the only problem that will
occur with data in the spreadsheet.
PROBLEM 1
Choosing Cut from the Edit menu (or pressing CTRL+X) will not cut
formatting from the selected cells if the spreadsheet does not contain
data.
Solution
Adding data to any cell on the spreadsheet corrects this Cut command
problem.
Steps to Reproduce Problem
- Create a new spreadsheet in Works.
- Highlight columns A, B, and C.
- From the Format menu, choose Patterns.
- In the Shading section of the Patterns dialog box, select the desired
pattern, background color, and foreground color. Choose OK.
- While the columns are still highlighted, choose Cut from the Edit
menu.
Result: The columns remain formatted.
Expected Result: The patterns should be cut from the columns.
PROBLEM 2
If you cut columns in a spreadsheet that are formatted (for example, they
have patterns and colors), and then you choose Undo Cut from the Edit menu,
the columns lose their formatting, and this formatting is applied to the
columns to the right.
Solution
After choosing Undo Cut, reformat the desired columns.
Steps to Reproduce Problem
- Create a new spreadsheet in Works.
- Highlight columns A, B, and C.
- From the Format menu, choose Patterns.
- In the Shading section of the Patterns dialog box, select the desired
pattern, background color, and foreground color. Choose OK.
- While the columns are still highlighted, choose Cut from the Edit
menu.
- From the Edit menu, choose Undo Cut.
Result: The formatting is removed from columns A, B, and C. Columns D,
E, and F now contain the formatting.
Expected Result: The Undo Cut should restore the formatting to columns
A, B, and C.
PROBLEM 3
If you add data to cells in formatted columns, then use the Cut command to
cut the columns and later use the Undo Cut command, Works only restores the
patterns in the cell(s) that contain data.
Steps to Reproduce Problem
- Create a new spreadsheet in Works.
- Highlight columns A and B.
- From the Format menu, choose Patterns.
- In the Shading section of the Patterns dialog box, select the desired
pattern, background color, and foreground color. Choose OK.
- Add data to A3.
- Highlight the columns A and B, and choose Cut from the Edit menu.
- From the Edit menu, choose Undo Cut.
Result: The data in A3 is restored correctly with the formatting, but
the formatting in the rest of the cells is missing.
Expected Result: The formatting should have been restored for all the cells
from which it was cut.
Microsoft has confirmed these issues to be problems in Works versions 3.0
and 3.0a for Windows. We are researching these problems and will post new
information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
