This article was previously published under Q114210 SYMPTOMS
You may receive the following error message when trying to save a Works for
Windows Word Processor file
Filename not valid. <FILENAME><extra characters>
where <FILENAME> is the name of the file and <extra characters> are
characters appended to the filename. The characters appended to the
filename may vary, such as swin, ysw or rdprrdrp. For example, the error message may read:
Filename not valid. WORD1swin
-or-
The file may save correctly, but the extra characters may be appended to
the filename after you save the file.
-or-
In the File Open dialog, invalid entries such as "swinwrite=windows" and
"*.wrimswinwrite=windows" may be listed under the List Files Of Type box,
and the file type descriptions for the other converters may be missing.
CAUSE
This occurs because entries in the [MS Text Converters] section of the
Win.ini file or Msworks3.ini file are corrupt. Two of the entries have been
incorrectly combined together on the same line.
The Win.ini contains the entries for all converters except for the Works
for the Macintosh converters, which are referenced in the Msworks3.ini.
Invalid entries in the [MS Text Converters] section of either file can
cause the problem.
RESOLUTION- Open the Win.ini file or Msworks3.ini file in a text editor such as
Notepad.
- Make sure each entry in the [MS Text Converters] section is on its own
line and is in the correct format, as follows:
<internal class name>=<description>,<path to converter>,<extension>
where:
- <internal class name> is the internal class name of the converter.
- <description> is the text description that will appear in the Save
File As Type drop-down list.
- <path to converter> is the full path to the converter together with
the name of the converter file.
- <extension> is the file extension that will automatically be added to
files created using this text converter.
EXAMPLE
If the characters "swin" are being added to the filename, the problem is
that the "Windows Write" and the "MSWinWrite" lines in the [MS Text
Converters] section of the Win.ini have been combined into one line. To
correct the problem:
- Locate the line in the [MS Text Converters] section that begins as
follows:
-or-
- Locate the section in the line that reads:
...writwin.cnv,wriMSWinWrite=Windows... - Insert a carriage return (press ENTER) to break the line into two
entries. For example:
Windows Write 3.0=Windows Write 3.0, C<path>writwin.cnv,wri
MSWinWrite=Windows Write 3.1, <path>writwin.cnv, wri - Save the changes to the Win.ini file or Msworks3.ini file, and exit
the text editor.
The Word Processor documents in Works should now save correctly.
