PRJ: Original Name Remains on Menu after Renaming View (113650)

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, if you rename a table, view, or filter in your project file, the table, view, or filter with the original name is still available on the respective menu.

CAUSE

This is by design in Microsoft Project. Any table, view, or filter that is contained in the GLOBAL.MPT file is available in any project. These items contained in the GLOBAL.MPT file are not copied to your project file until you apply the table, view, or filter to your project, even though they appear on their respective menus.

When you edit a table, view, or filter and change the name, and the item is contained in the GLOBAL.MPT file, you are only changing the name of the local table, view, or filter, even if you have not yet applied the item to your project file. Because of this, the global item contained in the GLOBAL.MPT file is still available, and still appears on the menu.

For Example, if you Edit the Gantt Chart view in the View Definition dialog box, and you change the name, Gantt Chart is still available on the View menu, along with the new view name.

When you use the Organizer to rename a table, view, or filter that appears in the project file list, the item still appears on the menu if the item also appears in the GLOBAL.MPT list. The item in the project file list is the local item, and the global item is still available when you rename the local item.

WORKAROUND

If you want to rename a view, table, or filter that is contained in the GLOBAL.MPT file, and you want the item renamed for every project, use the Organizer to rename the item listed in the GLOBAL.MPT list.

If you want to rename a view, table, or filter that is contained in the GLOBAL.MPT file, and you want the item renamed for the current project file only, do the following:
  1. On the View menu, click More Views.
  2. In the Views list, select the view that you want to rename and click Edit.
  3. In the Name box, type the name that you want for the new view. Click OK.
  4. In the Views list, select the view that you want to remove from the View menu and click Edit.
  5. Click to clear the Show In Menu check box.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Click Close.
Note that you can use these same steps to rename a table or filter using the More Tables or More Filters dialog box.
