Works: GPF in Works Spreadsheet/Database When Entering Date (113406)

SYMPTOMS

If you set long dates to display as short dates in the International section of the Windows Control Panel in Windows 3.0 or the Regional Settings section in the Windows 95 Control Panel, and the country is set to Sweden, you may receive a general protection (GP) fault in Works when you enter a date in a spreadsheet or database.

RESOLUTION

To avoid this problem, avoid formatting the long date in the International section (Windows 3.0) or the Regional Settings section (Windows 95) in Control Panel as a short date. Instead, format the dates in Works by clicking Number on the Format menu and selecting the desired short date style.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Works version 3.0, 4.0, 4.5, and 4.5a.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

If You Are Running Windows 95

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Regional Settings, and on the Regional Settings tab, change the setting to Swedish. Click OK.
  3. Click the Date tab.
  4. In the Long Date Style box, set the date to display as YY-MM-DD.
  5. Click OK to close the Regional Settings Properties dialog box and then close Control Panel.

    NOTE: You must restart you computer before the new setting will take effect.
  6. Create a new spreadsheet in Works.
  7. Type the word January in a cell and press ENTER.
You receive an invalid page fault error message in Windows 95.

If You Are Running Windows 3.0

  1. Run Control Panel and click the International icon.
  2. Select Sweden for the Country.
  3. In the Date Format box, click Change.
  4. In the Long Date Format box, set the date to display as YY-MM-DD.

    For example, select YMD, and if the date is 9/15/95, set the date to read

    95 09 15

  5. Click OK to close the International Date Format dialog box and click OK again to close the International dialog box.
  6. Create a new spreadsheet in Works.
  7. Type the word January in a cell and press ENTER.
A general protection (GP) fault occurs in Msworks.exe.
