SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Project, when you save a project file to a drive that contains more than enough available disk space for the file to be created, you receive the following error message
Disk is full
followed by:
An unexpected error occurred while saving the file. The file could not be saved.

CAUSE

When you save a project file in Microsoft Project, you must have disk space available on the drive that contains your TEMP directory, as well as on the drive to which you are saving the file. You need the following amount of disk space available on the drive that contains your TEMP directory in order to save the file:

  • Space to create the file
  • Space to store any embedded objects
  • An additional 10%
If you do not have this space available, you cannot save the file, even to a drive that does contain more than enough available disk space to store the file.

WORKAROUND

In order to save a project file after you receive this error message, when there is plenty of disk space available on the drive to which you are saving the file, you must free up some disk space on the drive that contains your TEMP directory.

To find the location of your TEMP directory, do the following:

  1. Open your AUTOEXEC.BAT file in Windows Notepad.
  2. In the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, locate the following line:

    Set Temp=
The letter following the equal sign in the Set Temp statement is the letter of the drive that contains your TEMP directory.

MORE INFORMATION

In applications that use the object linking and embedding (OLE) version 2.0 technology, the maximum size of a file that you can save is determined by the disk space available on the drive that contains your TEMP directory. The OLE 2.0 technology uses the TEMP directory to store temporary files whenever you save a file from an OLE 2.0 application, even if the file you are saving does not contain embedded objects.
