Error Installing RAS Without the NetBEUI Protocol Installed (105994)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows NT Server 3.1
- Microsoft Windows NT Workstation 3.1
- Microsoft Windows NT Advanced Server 3.1
This article was previously published under Q105994 SYMPTOMS
Under Windows NT, if you have networking software installed, but not
the NetBEUI Protocol, and you attempt to install Remote Access
Services (RAS), you will receive the following error message:
The Windows NT network software must be installed before installing
Remote Access.
To install the NT network software:
- Exit to Control Panel and restart the 'Network' Control Panel
application.
- Answer Yes at the Install Network prompt.
- If no network card is installed, choose None from the network card list.
NOTE: This error message may also appear when NetBEUI is installed, but the
NetBIOS interface is not installed in the Control Panel Network applet. If
this is the case, install NetBIOS in the Network applet.
CAUSE
This error message appears because the NetBEUI protocol is necessary
for RAS to operate in Windows NT. If another protocol, such as TCP/IP,
is installed and NetBEUI is removed, the above error message will
occur, even though some networking software is installed. The NetBEUI
protocol is installed in Windows NT by default.
RESOLUTION
To eliminate the above error message and for RAS to work, install the
NetBEUI protocol from the Network icon Control Panel.
