AST EISA computers with 16 MB or More RAM Causes Trap Errors (104653)

An AST EISA computer with 16 megabytes (MB) or more RAM has the "Stop
Scanning Memory Above 16 Meg" option enabled may cause Windows NT to
generate a STOP message with kernel trap errors.
CAUSE
AST EISA computers have an option, "Stop Scanning Memory Above 16
Meg," that is enabled by default. If this setting is enabled on
computers that have 16 MB or more of physical RAM installed, Windows
NT may exhibit a kernel trap error upon booting of the system. 16 MB
is actually 16384 kilobytes (K), so it appears that NTDETECT was
correctly detecting the full 16384K. However, the EISA configuration
is only reporting available memory to 16000K, which causes the above
error message to occur.
RESOLUTION
To prevent the error messages, disable the "Stop Scanning Memory Above
16 Meg" option with the EISA configuration utility disk that is
supplied by the manufacturer.
