If the WRKSWIN.CNV file is missing, corrupt, or the conversion line in the WIN.INI file is incorrect, you will receive the following error message when pasting a character into Works for Windows from the Character Map:
Cannot Load Conversion Files
The WRKSWIN.CNV file is a Works conversion file. It is located in the MSAPPS\TEXTCONV subdirectory of your WINDOWS directory.

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Verify the WRKSWIN.CNV file is located in the MSAPPS\TEXTCONV subdirectory of your WINDOWS directory. If it is missing, perform a custom installation of Works for Windows and select "Converters for Word Processor and Graphics" from the list of choices.
  2. If the WRKSWIN.CNV file is not missing, verify that the MSWorksWin conversion path in the WIN.INI file is correct using the following steps:

    1. Open the WIN.INI file in a text editor such as Notepad.
    2. The MSWorksWin line in the [MS Text Converters] section of the WIN.INI file should read as follows (and should appear on ONE line):
               MSWorksWin=Works for Windows 2.0,C:\WINDOWS\MSAPPS\TEXTCONV\ 
               wrkswin.cnv,wps
      								
    3. Make any necessary corrections, save the WIN.INI file, and restart Windows.
  3. If the WRKSWIN.CNV file is not missing and the WIN.INI file is correct, the file may be corrupt. Delete the WRKSWIN.CNV file from the MSAPPS\TEXTCONV subdirectory of WINDOWS and do a Custom Installation of Works for Windows. Select "Converters for Word Processor and Graphics" from the list of choices.
