Kings and Assholes client mod beta test release README 12:15 AM Feb 17 2000 Contents 1. Introduction 2. Instructions 3. Requirements 4. Installation 5. Troubleshoot 6. Credits 1. Introduction This is the third release candidate beta of the Kings and Assholes (K&A) client mod for Quake III: Arena. K&A is no longer a client optional Deathmatch mod. We are running a server, pretty much full time, called "[KA]K&A www.nicotinetea.com". Feel free to connect any time and play. The IP is 208.236.41.194. 2. Instructions You play K&A in much the same way you play normal deathmatch -- run around and shoot people. A lot. But the scoring is the main difference. The object of K&A is to become the King, and stay there as long as possible. Here are the rules: - Each player has a rank. - If you kill someone with a higher rank than you, they take your rank and everyone between moves up a rank. - If you're at the top of the list, you're the King. - At the bottom of the list are the Assholes. - In between are the Peons. - The number of assholes depends on the number of people playing -- one asshole added for every five people up to 15 (with a minimum of 1 Asshole). The king and the assholes get a few special things: - King: can't call a vote, but his vote wins any vote. Wears the blue skin for his model. - Asshole: gets all weapons on the level. Wears the red skin for his model. - Big Asshole: Asshole + unlimited ammo - Total asshole: Big Asshole + permanent battlesuit - Motherfucker: Total Asshole + permanent invisibility - There is a new feature, autohandicapping. This makes it so that the more time you spend as King, the weaker you are. This is intended to balance gameplay. This feature can be disabled by the server operator. - The location of the King is broadcast to all clients every 5 seconds. - Maps use the Teamplay item placements so that locations are correct. - The idea of Kings & Assholes is to balance out play a bit between good players and awful ones. Soon, a point scoring system will be added that awards points based on time spent at the different ranks. - K&A does not require a client side mod. You can play on a KA server with a standard issue Q3Arena installation. - The client modification is strongly reccomended and has the following enhancements: - The King glows green and a green Excellent award flies over his head. - Total Assholes and Motherfuckers glow red. - Players with a lower rank than you have red triangles flying over their heads. - The scoreboard is a bit different. - There is a team-style display in the upper right-hand corner of the screen that tells you who is King, where they are, how much health and armor they have, and any powerups they might have. - You can turn the rules display in the scoreboard by setting cg_noKARules to 1. - Some gameplay rules will undoubtedly change over the next few days as we finalize server gameplay code. This document may not have the most current rules. Please check the website for updates. 3. Requirements a. Quake III: Arena with valid license key b. Q3A 1.15 point release 4. Installation If you have a pre-RC2 version of the mod you should delete the KA folder in your Q3 directory prior to installation. Unzip the file into your Q3A directory. Make sure the "use directory information" option is checked. This should create a KA directory containing a pk3 file. To play K&A, you need to do two things: start Q3A with the K&A mod, and connect to a K&A client. Starting Q3A with the K&A mod means telling Q3A at startup "+set fs_game ka". In Windows, create a shortcut to your Q3A executable. There's probably one on your desktop you can copy. Rename it something like "Q3A - K&A mod". In the properties dialog for the new shortcut, in the Target: field, after "\Quake3.exe", add (outside the quotation marks) "+set fs_game ka" (without the quotation marks). It should look like this: "C:\Program Files\Quake III Arena\quake3.exe" +set fs_game ka Now click OK, and open the shortcut. Go to the multiplayer menu and find a game to play in. If it's a K&A server, you will connect and start playing K&A. Otherwise, you should connect normally and play whatever type of game the server is running. 5. Troubleshooting a. Look at our website ( http://www.nicotinetea.com ) for a troubleshooting FAQ. If it's not up yet, e-mail us or figure it out yourself. Common problems include failure to install the point release and not running Q3A with "+set fs_game ka" in the command line. 6.
