Quake Ultimate Configuration v1.0 (C)1996 Intag Productions Installation It is recommended that you backup your AUTOEXEC.CFG and QUAKE.RC file (in ID1) before installing these files. 1) Copy the AUTOEXEC.CFG file into your ID1 directory, allowing it to overwrite the existing file. 2) Copy the QUAKE.RC file into your ID1 directory, allowing it to overwrite the existing file. 3) Rename your QUAKE.EXE file to QUAKEX.EXE. 4) Copy the QUAKE.BAT file into your QUAKE directory. What else can be done to maximize the speed of Quake? There are a number of settings in your system BIOS that you can set to make your computer run much faster. Be warned: MAKING CHANGES TO YOUR SYSTEM BIOS CAN HAVE UNPREDICTABLE RESULTS. WE CANNOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE DONE TO YOU OR YOUR COMPUTER BY CHANGING YOUR SYSTEM BIOS. Although it is possible for your system to crash horribly, we have tested these settings (And many more) on a typical 486, with no problems. The first thing you should do is turn all SHADOWING ON. We don't really know what it does, but it seems to work great. Beyond activating shadowing, you can also try activating/deactivating some of the other memory related switches. These will vary depending on your system BIOS, but a common one seems to be the boot speed. It's wierd how computer vendors don't ship their computers with these settings already active, as it would make the computer seem that much more powerful, but then, it may also cause unusual problems. Why did Intag create this product? Simple. With our upcoming TC for Quake (Due out sometime in '97), we want to let even people with a 486 experience this great game at a decent speed. The latest version of this will be included with the TC, with some other changes for the program. If you discover another way to increase Quake's speed on a 486, your help would be apreciated! Just fill out the form on our web site and your idea may be added to the next version of Quake Ultimate Configuration.
