7.3.2.1 Formatted Direct Access WRITE Statement

The formatted direct access WRITE statement performs the following operations:

• It retrieves binary values from internal storage.

• It translates those values to character form by using format specifications to provide editing.

• It writes the translated data to a user-specified external record accessed under the direct mode of access.

If the values specified by the I/O list and formatting do not fill the output record being written, the unused portion of the record is filled with space characters. If the values do not fit in the record, an error occurs.
