It is not possible to identify the CD-ROM drive speed or manufacturer by external means. If the symptoms in the "Enhancements/Fixes" section are being encountered, it is suggested that the user try this firmware upgrade procedure. If the drive is the wrong type or made by another supplier, the utility will report back the drive type and current firmware and will not perform the firmware upgrade. Enhancements/Fixes: - Resolves issue of inability to boot to CDR (user-recorded) media and problems with reading CDR media. - Resolves problem of audible noise from the CD drive when operating in a vertical position. - Resolves problem of audio CDs skipping when the drive is in a vertical position. HOW TO USE: 1. Obtain a formatted 1.44-MB diskette. 2. Download the SoftPaq to a directory on your hard drive and change to that directory. The file that is downloaded is an executable with a filename based on the SoftPaq Number above. 3. From that drive and directory, execute the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions. You will be prompted to insert the formatted diskette in a drive to create the diskette. 4. After the diskette has been created, you may delete the SoftPaq file downloaded in step 2. 5. Copy the files from the created diskette to a temporary location on the hard drive of the portable. 6. Shut down the computer (power down). 7. Remove the floppy drive and plug the 24X CD-ROM drive into the multi-bay. Remove any media from the CD-ROM drive. 8. Turn the unit on and boot into MS-DOS (not a DOS window). If using Windows 95, this can be done by booting to Windows, clicking the Start icon, and choosing "Shut Down" and then "Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode". 9. When in DOS, change to the hard drive directory that contains the files stored in Step 5. 10. Type in "80mps.bat" to run the program. The program will report if the firmware upgrade was successful or not. 11. After successfully re-programming the drive firmware, shut down the system (cycle power).
