SetFile 1.1, March 11th, 1997

For Be OS DR8.2

David Evans (dfevans@bbcr.uwaterloo.ca)

Introduction
------------

This is a simple browser add-on to perform setfile on the selected
items. It's not perfect, but it saves going back to the shell all
the time to do it.

It is based on Be's "MakeArchive" add-on, to the extent that it's a
straight modification of the code. There should be few surprises,
although it's possible to fool its limited error checking by passing
it a ref that doesn't point anywhere. In this case it will complain
that it cannot setfile a database-only item.

There is no new functionality in 1.1; it has just been compiled for DR8.2.

Installation
------------

Once you unpack the archive, simply place SetFile in
/system/add-ons/Browser. You should then be all set with a new
entry in the Browser's "Add-Ons" menu.

Programming Info
----------------

Tip: For those trying to wade through the description of the name-
mangling scheme in the Kernel Kit chapter of The Be Book, give up.
Just use "pefdump" on your add-on's image. It will spit out, amid
the PPC assembly code, the labels which correspond to your entry
points. Very handy in the absence of something like "nm".

Extra Goodie
------------

SFTest

SFTest is a small program which I wrote to test the add-on. Since
add-ons running in the browser have no standard I/O, I needed a way
to test things from a Terminal window. This is it. Note that it is
very stupid, but then it isn't used much.
