Launching Instant Messenger

Methods of Launching Instant Messenger
The two ways to launch Sun Java System Instant Messenger are:
- Using the Java Plug-in (Windows users only) - You can launch Sun Java System Instant Messenger as an applet from the Java Plug-in, (which is a code extension to the browser).
- Using Java Web Start (Windows, Mac OS, Linux, and Solaris users - You can launch Sun Java System Instant Messenger from Java Web Start (JWS), an application launcher which can launch web-delivered Java applications. Once Sun Java System Instant Messenger is launched, your browser can be closed or used to locate other URLs without affecting the Sun Java System Instant Messenger session.
Windows users can choose to implement either the JWS or the Java Plug-in configuration. Unix, Linux, and Mac OS users must use Java Web Start. Contact your administrator or technical support center for more details.
To Launch Instant Messenger with Java Plug-in (Windows only)
Before launching Sun Java System Instant Messenger, make sure you have downloaded and installed the Java software to enable Sun Java System Instant Messenger. If necessary, check with your administrator or technical support center.
- To launch Sun Java System Instant Messenger, enter the following URL in your browser:
http://webserver:webserverport/subdirectory/im.html
where webserverport is necessary only if the default port (80) is not being used, and subdirectory is necessary only if one was specified at installation. If the default directory was used, then subdirectory is unnecessary. Contact your administrator or technical support center for more information.
For example, if your web server is named company22.com and it uses web port 123, then the URL would be:
http://company22.com:123/im.html
- Sun Java System Instant Messenger starts and displays its Logon window.
- Log in to Sun Java System Instant Messenger.

To Launch Instant Messenger with Java Web Start (Solaris, Windows, Linux)
Before launching Instant Messenger, make sure you have downloaded and installed the software to enable Instant Messenger software. See http://java.sun.com/products/javawebstart
To enable Java Web Start support in your web server, you need to edit the web server’s mime.types file to include the following definition for JNLP:
Content Type: application/x-java-jnlp-file
Suffix: jnlpIf necessary, check with your administrator or technical support center.
To launch Instant Messenger for the first time:
- Enter the following URL in your browser:
http://webserver:webserverport/subdirectory/im.jnlp
where webserverport is necessary only if the default port (80) is not being used, and subdirectory is necessary only if one was specified at installation. If the default directory was used, then subdirectory is unnecessary. If necessary, contact your administrator or technical support center for more information.
For example, if your web server is named company22.com and Instant Messenger is invoked from the default directory, then the URL would be:
http://company22.com/
- On the Sun Java System Instant Messenger web page that appears, click the Launch via Java Web Start button.
When you invoke Instant Messenger for the first time, a pop-up window appears. Java Web Start automatically downloads the Sun Java System Instant Messenger resource files and caches them on your machine.
- Click Accept in the Security pop-up window that appears.
- Instant Messenger starts and displays its Logon window.
- Logon to Instant Messenger.

To Launch the Instant Messenger on Mac OS
To launch Sun Java System Instant Messenger on Mac OS with Java Web Start:
- Enter the URL provided by your system administrator or by your technical support center in your browser or click “Start Messenger with Java Web Start” button. This will cause Java Web Start to download Sun Java System Instant Messenger.
- A sign-on window is displayed. Enter your login name and password in the sign-on window and click OK.
- After the login name and password is authenticated, the main Sun Java System Instant Messenger window is displayed.
- Logon to Instant Messenger.
