Removing Storage Trays

$DEV_NAME $FRU_NAME, has been selected.

To prepare for this service action, perform the following:

  • Enable the reserve the Common Storage Module (CSM) or Common Expansion Module (CEM) function.

    1. Reserve the CSM/CEM for maintenance.

    2. Enter a description of the service action (removing a tray).

    3. Select the estimated amount of time of the service action from the pull-down.

    4. Select the Reserve button.

      a) Other users will be alerted that this service action is in progress when they login.

  • Ensure that there is no system I/O to the tray being removed.

  • Ensure that the customer has removed all data (volumes) from the tray being removed before removing power.

  • Ensure that no other trays and their volumes are affected by this tray removal.

  • This service activity requires two people to lift the tray. The tray can weight up to 95 Lbs. when fully populated.

  • Observe all ESD precautions.

  • If needed, to help locate the correct tray, activate the flashing Amber LEDs:

    a) Turn on the tray disk drive Amber LEDs.

    b) View the tray disk drive LED location illustration.

    Recabling the Tray(s)

    1. If the only expansion tray was removed, then only the expansion tray cables will need to be removed.

    2. If a controller tray (no expansion trays) was removed, then only the host and ethernet cables will need to be removed.

    3. If an expansion tray was removed and expansion tray(s) remain connect one copper FC cable from the controller "B" expansion port of the controller tray, to the IOM "B" port 2 of the now last expansion tray.

    4. If an expansion tray was removed and expansion tray(s) remain connect one copper FC cable from either the controller "A" expansion port of controller tray or from the IOM "A" port 2 of the next to last expansion tray, to the IOM "A" port 1 of the now last expansion tray.

    If necessary, use the following two examples to help install the copper FC expansion cables.

    Removing Power to the Tray(s)

    1. From the rear, press the power switches on the power supplies to the Off positions on the tray to be removed.

    To Remove a Storage Tray

    1. Remove the power cables from each power supply in the tray to be removed.

    2. If a controller tray is being removed, remove the host interface cables from the controller cards. If an expansion tray is being removed, remove the expansion tray cables from the I/O modules.

    3. From the rear, remove the screws that secure the tray to the rails in the cabinet.

    4. From the front of the cabinet, remove the end caps from each side of the tray.

    5. Remove the four screws that secure the tray to the cabinet frame.

    6. Slide the tray out of the cabinet using two people. Use care the tray is heavy.

    7. Install the appropriate number of filler panels for the removed tray.

    Updating the Inventory

      Note: If a controller tray was removed then it will need to be removed from the inventory. Only steps one and two will need to be completed. If an expansion tray (with IOMs) was removed the inventory will need to be updated and step two can be skipped.

    1. Disable the reserve CSM/CEM function.

      a) Select the Release button.

    2. The removed controller tray will need to be removed from the inventory.

      a) Remove the tray from the Inventory.

      b) At the Devices window, select the name of the tray that was removed from the "Discover" column.

      c) Select the "Remove" button.

      The Agent will need to be run to update the inventory.

      a) Run the Agent.

      b) At the Agent Summary window, select the box under the Add Agent column for the appropriate host that the remaining trays are attached to.

      c) Select the "Run Agent" button to execute the Agent.

    3. After the Agent has executed, the Device Details should be checked to confirm the State is "Enabled" and the Status is "OK" for all of the FRUs.

      a) Review the Device Details.

      b) At the Devices window, select the appropriate name of the controller module from under the Name column.

      c) At the Device Details window, select the FRUs link at the left top of the screen or scroll down to the FRUs section.

      d) From the left column under FRUs, select each FRU type to verify that the State is "Enabled" and the Status is "OK".

    4. Turn off the Amber LEDs used to locate the CSM/CEM.

      a) Turn Off tray LEDs.
