Remove and Replace an SFP Transceiver

$DEV_NAME $FRU_NAME, has been selected.

To prepare for this service action, perform the following:

  • Enable the reserve Common Raid Module (CRM) or Common Expansion Module (CEM) function.

    1. Reserve the CRM/CEM for maintenance.

    2. Enter a description of the service action (replacing an SFP Transceiver).

    3. Select the estimated amount of time of the service action from the pull-down.

    4. Select the Reserve button.

      a) Other users will be alerted that this service action is in progress when they login.

  • Generate a current FRU inventory.

  • Observe all ESD precautions.

    To Remove and Replace a SFP Transceiver

    1. If needed, to help locate the correct tray, activate the White locate LED:

      a) Turn On the White locate LED.

      b) View the White locate LED location illustration.

    2. From the rear, locate the failed SFP transceiver by checking the fault light on the controller. If a fault is detected, the Service Action Required LED (Amber) will be on.

      a) View the controller port locations.

      b) View the IOM port locations.

    3. Verify that the SFP transceiver is ready to remove.

      a) The SFP transceiver "State" should be "Enabled but Offline" and the "Status" should be "Error".

      b) If the SFP transceiver "Status" is not "Error" contact your Sun Service provider or your next level of technical support.

    4. If this is a host SFP, disconnect the fiber-optic interface cables by squeezing the end of the cable connector. Make sure that the cables are labeled before removing them. The cables are fragile, use care when handling them.

      a) If this is an expansion tray SFP/cable, disconnect the SFP/cable by squeezing the end of the cable connector at both ends. Skip step five (5).

      a) View the fibre optic cable and SFP transceiver illustration.

      Important: To prevent possible loss of access to data - be sure to remove the correct cable and SFP.

      Important: Potential degraded performance - To prevent degraded performance, do not twist, fold, pinch, or step on fiber-optic cables. Do not bend the fiber-optic cables tighter than a 2 inch radius.

    5. Remove the failed host SFP transceiver from the controller by pushing down on the small lever at the top of the transceiver.

      a) View the SFP transceiver removal illustration.

    6. Unpack the new SFP transceiver or SFP/cable and verify it is the same type that you are replacing. Save all of the packing materials to return the failed SFP transceiver or SFP/cable in. Use care when handling either the new or the failed SFP transceiver or SFP/cable.

      If this is an SFP/cable skip step seven (7).

    7. If this is a host SFP, insert the SFP transceiver until it clicks into place and is completely seated.

    8. Insert the host fiber-optic interface cable until it clicks into place and is completely seated.

      a) If this is an expansion tray SFP/cable insert the SFP/cable until it clicks into place and is completely seated at both ends.

      b) The Green connector link LED should turn "On".

      c) Verify that the Bypass and Fault LEDs are now off.

    9. Verify the SFP transceiver "State" and "Status":

      a) The SFP "State" should be "Enabled" and the "Status" should be "OK".

      b) If the SFP "State" is not "Enabled" and the "Status" is not "OK" contact your Sun Service provider or your next level of technical support.

    10. A new FRU inventory will need to be created for the new SFP transceiver: Generate new FRU inventory.

    11. Turn Off the White LED used to locate the CRM/CEM.

      a) Turn Off White locate LED.

    12. Disable the reserve CRM/CEM function.

      a) Select the Release button.
