Remove and Replace Storage Input / Output Card (SIO)

    Note: The SIO and SRC cards must be replaced as a pair. After replacing the SIO card you must replace the corresponding SRC card.

    Note: If these procedures have been linked from an Event Grid/Event Advisor Alarm skip step 3.

  1. Before starting this service action enable the reserve cabinet(s) function.

    a) Reserve the cabinet(s) for maintenance.

    b) Enter a description of the service action (i.e. replacing SIO card).

    c) Select the estimated amount of time of the service action from the pull-down.

    d) Select the Reserve Cabinet(s) button.

    e) Other users will be alerted that this service action is in progress when they log in.

    f) Close the pop-up screen.

  2. Observe all ESD precautions.

  3. If the correct SIO card has been selected proceed to step 4 or return to the previous screen to select another SIO card.

    a) Close the pop-up screen.

  4. From the rear of the cabinet unscrew the three captive fasteners on the right side of the service processor and I/O panel and then open the panel.

  5. Check the LEDs to determine if the card is in an active state.

    a) If the Link LED (Green) is On solid, the link is connected. If the LED is not On, the link is not connected.

    b) If the Act LED (Amber) is On or blinking, there is activity on the link. If the LED is not On or blinking, there is no activity on the link.

  6. Make sure all host activity to the SIO card has been stopped.

  7. Verify that the SIO card is ready to remove: $DEV_NAME - $FRU.

    a) The Show Chassis screen State should be "fault" or "powered off".

    b) If the SIO card is NOT "fault" or "powered off" call your Sun Service provider to assist with this service action.

    c) Close the pop-up screen.

  8. From the rear of the cabinet, remove all of the fibre optic cables from the SIO card. Be sure to label all cables and their port locations.

  9. Loosen the SIO card's captive screws, one on each side of the face plate. A Phillips screw driver may be required to loosen the screw.

    a) View the SIO card removal illustration.

    b) Close the pop-up screen.

  10. Pull the lock and ejector handles outward completely to release the card from the mid-plane chassis.

  11. Slide the card out of its slot until it is completely removed from the chassis.

  12. To maintain proper cooling do not leave the card slot empty for an extended length of time.

  13. Remove the GBICs from the removed SIO card.

  14. Place the removed SIO card in an antistatic bag.

  15. Insert the new SIO card making sure that the lock and ejector handles are completely open and slide the card into the slot until it connects with the chassis mid-plane. Alignment pins located on the edge of the card should be aligned with the guide holes in the chassis. Use care not to bend any pins.

  16. Push in the lock and ejector handles to secure the SIO card in place. The card face plate should be flush with the adjoining cards in the chassis.

  17. Secure the card by tightening the captive screws on the card face plate.

  18. Insert the GBICs into the correct ports of the new SIO card.

  19. Insert the fibre optic cables into the correct ports.

  20. The SIO card will only boot after the corresponding SRC card has been replaced. Then the Link LEDs (Green) will be On for all connected ports.

  21. Return to the DSP FRU menu to select the corresponding SRC card for replacement.
