The following are required to run Intant Messaging on Solaris™ or Linux:


Launching Sun ONE Instant Messenger Overview

Sun ONE Instant Messenger on Unix is launched using Java Web Start, which is an application launcher for Java 2 applets. Once Sun ONE Instant Messenger is launched, your browser can be closed or used to locate other URLs without affecting the Sun ONE Instant Messenger session.

To launch Sun ONE Instant Messenger:

  1. Enter the URL provided by your system administrator in your browser or click “Start Messenger with Java Web Start” button. This will cause Java Web Start to download the Sun ONE Instant Messenger applet.
  2. A sign-on window is displayed. Enter your login name and password in the sign-on window and click ok.
  3. After the login name and password is authenticated, the main Sun ONE Instant Messenger window is displayed.

    The first time you use Sun ONE Instant Messenger, you may have to grant the messenger execution rights on your system.


This simple procedure assumes that your browser was able to find Java Web Start on your system.

To indicate that Java Web Start is either not installed or not enabled for your browser, an XML page is displayed. To install Java refer to the section on Installing Java.


Installing Java

Java Web Start is included with the Java Run time Environment in version 1.4. If you already have Java 1.4 on your system, skip to Step 2.

After installing Java Web Start, start the Instant Messenger again. Refer to the trouble shooting section for help, if the Instant Messenger is not launched.
