Modifying Load Balancing

To configure load balancing on a scalable service, you need to change resource weights.

To change resource weights, perform the following steps.

  1. Display any window in the Resource Groups section of SunPlex Manager.

To display a Resource Groups window, select Resource Groups or [resource group name]>[resource name] from the Resource Group section of the SunPlex Manager navigational frame.

  3. Choose the resource to modify.
  4. Click Modify Load Balancing.

SunPlex Manager displays an additional window with the current weights.

  5. Adjust load balancing.

To adjust load balancing, enter a new number in the Weight field. When you change a node's weight, the Load Distribution field automatically updates with the new load distribution. This distribution is displayed as a percentage.

Note: The Load Distribution fields will only display values if you enable Javascript in your browser. If Javascript is disabled, the fields will appear empty.

For an example, see the following table.

Nodes running the resource Weight by node Load distribution
    Node One 1 25%
    Node Two 1 25%
    Node Three 2 50%

    How to Determine Load Distribution
To determine load distribution, divide the node's weight by the total weight for all nodes. The total weight for all nodes is determined by adding the weight of all nodes together.

In this example, Node One's weight is 1 and the total weight is 4. Therefore, Node One's load is 1/4 or 25 percent of the total load.

  6. Click Modify Load Balancing.

SunPlex Manager displays a confirmation message, including the command that is used to complete the task. Note this command for future use in scripts and other automated tasks.

Clearing STOP_FAILED Flag

You need to clear the STOP_FAILED flag when the Take Group Offline task fails.

The STOP_FAILED resource state prevents you from unknowingly starting several instances of an application that the resource controls. Before you clear the STOP_FAILED flag, ensure the resource is offline.

Having a resource in the STOP_FAILED state prevents you from performing several tasks.

To clear a STOP_FAILED Flag, perform the following steps.

Recommended
Step Recommended step. Open a telnet window to the node that the resource failed on and manually stop the resource application(s).

This step might require you to kill processes, run resource type-specific commands, or use other commands.

  1. Display any window in the Resource Groups section of SunPlex Manager.

To display a Resource Groups window, select Resource Groups or [resource group name]>[resource name] from the Resource Group section of the SunPlex Manager navigational frame.

  2. Choose Clear STOP_FAILED Flag from the Actions menu.

  3. Choose the resource that needs to have its STOP_FAILED Flag cleared.
  4. Click Clear Flag to continue.

SunPlex Manager displays a confirmation message, including the command that is used to complete the task.

When this task is completed, the resource and resource group status will be offline.

Note: If you clear the STOP_FAILED flag, but do not manually stop the resource applications, the resource might not be properly stopped.
