Bringing a Resource Group Online/Switching Primaries

Performing this task brings a resource group online on the node(s) specified. This action can bring a resource group online for the first time or switch the node(s) that the resource group is running on.

When you perform this task, SunPlex Manager also automatically manages the resource group. You need to enable the resources in the resource group.

Bring a resource group online to allow resources to begin providing failover or scalable services.

Switch primaries for the following reasons.

To bring a resource group online or switch primaries, perform the following steps.

  1. Display any window in the Resource Groups section of SunPlex Manager.

To display a Resource Groups window, select Resource Groups or [resource group name] from the Resource Group section of the SunPlex Manager navigational frame.

  2. Choose Bring Group Online/Switch Primaries from the Actions menu.

SunPlex Manager displays a task window that prompts for additional information.

  3. Choose the resource group to bring online.
  4. Select the primary node(s) that the resource group will run on.

If the resource group is Failover, select one new primary.
If the resource group is Scalable, you can select more than one new primary.

  5. Click Bring Online/Set Primaries to continue.

SunPlex Manager displays a confirmation message, including the command that is used to complete the task. Note this command for future use in scripts and other automated tasks.

Taking a Resource Group Offline

You need to take a resource group offline for the following reasons.

Warning Performing this task puts the selected resource group into an unmanaged state on all nodes.

After you take a resource group offline, the resource group cannot restart until you bring the resource group online.

To take a resource group offline, perform the following steps.

  1. Display any window in the Resource Groups section of SunPlex Manager.

To display a Resource Groups window, select Resource Groups or [resource group name] from the Resource Group section of the SunPlex Manager navigational frame.

  2. Choose Take Group Offline from the Actions menu.

SunPlex Manager displays a task window that prompts for additional information.

  3. Choose the resource group to take offline.
  4. Click Take Resource Group Offline.

SunPlex Manager displays a confirmation message, including the command that is used to complete the task. Note this command for future use in scripts and other automated tasks.

Note: If the application that the resource is controlling fails to stop, the SunPlex Manager places a STOP_FAILED flag on the associated resource and resource group.

You need to manually check the resource application to see if it is running, stop the application on the node that it is running on, and clear the STOP_FAILED flag.

Restarting a Resource Group

If dependencies exist between a resource that needs to be restarted and other resources in the same resource group, you can restart the resource group to prevent the resources from coming online in the wrong order.

Warning Restarting a resource group takes the selected resource group and all of its resources offline and then online on the resource group's primary nodes.

To restart a resource group, perform the following steps.

  1. Display any window in the Resource Groups section of SunPlex Manager.

To display a Resource Groups window, select Resource Groups or [resource group name] from the Resource Group section of the SunPlex Manager navigational frame.

  2. Ensure that the resource group is online.

If the resource group is offline, select Bring Online/Switch Primaries from the Actions menu to bring the resource group online. SunPlex Manager cannot restart a resource group that is offline.

  3. Choose Restart Group from the Actions menu.

SunPlex Manager displays a task window that prompts for additional information.

  4. Choose the resource group to be restarted.
  5. Click Restart Resource Group

SunPlex Manager displays a confirmation message, including the command that is used to complete the task. Note this command for future use in scripts and other automated tasks.

Managing a Resource Group

You need to manage a resource group to make the cluster aware of it. When the resource group is managed, the cluster can make resource group decisions such as which node to bring the resource group online on, or where the resource group fails over to.

To manage a resource group, perform the following steps.

  1. Display any window in the Resource Groups section of SunPlex Manager.

To display a Resource Groups window, select Resource Groups or [resource group name] from the Resource Group section of the SunPlex Manager navigational frame.

  2. Choose Manage Group from the Actions menu.

SunPlex Manager displays a task window that prompts for additional information.

  3. Choose the group to be managed.
  4. Click Manage Resource Group to continue.

SunPlex Manager displays a confirmation message, including the command that is used to complete the task. Note this command for future use in scripts and other automated tasks.

Unmanaging a Resource Group

Prior to performing an administrative procedure on a resource group, you might need to unmanage the resource group. Unmanaging a resource group prevents the resource group from failing over and restarting on another node.

You need to disable each resource in the resource group before you unmanage the resource group. After you select Unmanage Group, SunPlex Manager takes the resource group offline.

Warning Performing this task puts the selected resource group into an unmanaged state on all nodes.

To unmanage a resource group, perform the following steps.

  1. Display any window in the Resource Groups section of SunPlex Manager.

To display a Resource Groups window, select Resource Groups or [resource group name] from the Resource Group section of the SunPlex Manager navigational frame.

  2. Choose Unmanage Group from the Actions menu.

SunPlex Manager displays a task window that prompts for additional information.

  3. Choose the group to be unmanaged.
  4. Click Unmanage Resource Group to continue.

SunPlex Manager displays a confirmation message, including the command that is used to complete the task. Note this command for future use in scripts and other automated tasks.

Creating a New Resource Group

A resource group contains a set of resources, all of which are brought online or offline together on a specific node or set of nodes. You must create an empty resource group before placing resources into it.

The two resource group types are failover and scalable. A failover resource group can be online on only one node at any time. A scalable resource group can be online on multiple nodes simultaneously.

To create a new resource group, perform the following steps.

  1. Display any window in the Resource Groups section of SunPlex Manager.

To display a Resource Groups window, select Resource Groups or [resource group name] from the Resource Group section of the SunPlex Manager navigational frame.

  2. Choose Create New Group from the Actions menu.

SunPlex Manager displays a task window that prompts for additional information.

  3. Type the name of the resource group.
  4. Select the primary nodes that the resource group will run on.

The nodes you select become the resource group's ordered nodelist.

  5. Type the desired number of nodes that the group can run on simultanelously.

The default is one. If you are creating a failover resource group, the value of this property must be no greater than one. If you are creating a scalable resource group, a value greater than one is allowed.

  6. Type the maximum number of nodes where the group might be online at once.

The default is one. If you are creating a Failover Resource Group, the value of this property must be no greater than one. If you are creating a Scalable Resource Group, a value greater than one is allowed.

  7. Click one of the buttons to continue.
  8. Modify the resource group property information for your configuration.

See the Resource Group Properties table for a complete description of each property.

Note: If you are creating a resource group that will hold an NFS resource, specify the Pathprefix Directory.

You can specify any directory for this purpose. However, you must manually create the PathPrefix directory before you add an NFS resource to the group.

For more information on setting up the PathPrefix Directory, see Installing Sun Cluster HA for NFS.

  9. Click Create Resource Group to continue.

SunPlex Manager displays a confirmation message, including the command that is used to complete the task. Note this command for future use in scripts and other automated tasks.

Deleting a Resource Group

You might need to delete a resource group if you change the cluster's configuration or function.

Warning By deleting a resource group, you permanently delete the selected resource group and all of the resources it contains.

To delete a resource group, perform the following steps.

  1. Display any window in the Resource Groups section of SunPlex Manager.

To display a Resource Groups window, select Resource Groups or [resource group name] from the Resource Group section of the SunPlex Manager navigational frame.

  2. Choose Delete Group from the Actions menu.

SunPlex Manager displays a task window that prompts for additional information.

  3. Choose the resource group to be deleted.
  4. Click Delete Resource Group to continue.

SunPlex Manager displays a confirmation message, including the command that is used to complete the task. Note this command for future use in scripts and other automated tasks.
