Getting Started with PDASync
The PDASync Application
The PDA Synchronization (PDASync) application synchronizes the data from
Sun applications such as Desktop Calendar, Desktop Mail, Memo, and Address,
with data in similar applications on your Personal Digital Assistant (PDA).
The PDASync software also allows you to install applications and databases
from your workstation/server to your PDA.
The applications correlate in the following manner:
Sun Workstation |
PDA Applications |
Calendar manager |
Date Book |
Address manager |
Address Book |
Desktop mail |
Mail |
Text Note |
Memo Pad |
PDASync supports most Palm Pilot Computing platform handheld devices,
including the Palm V, Palm III and PalmPilot Professional Edition.
Installing PDASync
-
1. If there happens to be a previous version of the PDASync software
installed, remove the SUNWpdas package using the command:
-
# pkgrm SUNWpdas
-
2. Change directories to the directory on the CDROM that contains
the PDASync packages, and install the updated version of SUNWpdas using
the command:
-
# pkgadd -d . SUNWpdas
Logging In
The PDA Synchronization (PDASync) application is as
an icon on your CDE desktop in the Application Manager. It is activated
when you first login. When you exit the application, you will need to restart
PDASync manually in order to perform synchronization again.
Entering a PDA Name
The PDA name is the unique name you give to your PDA
to identify it for the system. This dialog appears only once, the first
time you log in. If you have already given your PDA a name, this dialog
will not display.
Entering a PDA Password
Enter your PDA password. If your PDA has a password,
a dialog asks you for it every time the application runs. If your PDA does
not have a password, this dialog does not appear.
PDA sync opens by default to the Synchronization tab in the PDA Synchronization
window.
The status line shows that the application is ready to synchronize.
Setting the Port
When the Synchronization window appears, the first thing you must do is
establish the port setting:
-
Click the button (the one with a checkmark on it) on the lower left-hand
side of the Synchronization tab.
-
Select the port (A, B, or C) to which you connected the PDA.
-
Press the Sync button on the PDA device.
Accessing the PDASync Software
Access the PDASync software in one of two ways:
-
Using the desktop icon.
-
Open the Applications pull down menu from the Control Panel (typically
at the bottom of your screen).
-
Click on Applications to open Application Manager.
-
Click on Desktop_Apps to locate the PDASync icon.
-
Click on PDASync.
In order to make the PDASync icon more accessible in the future, drag and
drop the PDASync icon from the Desktop_Apps screen into the Install area
of the Application pull down menu or into your user space.
-
Entering /usr/dt/bin/stdpdasync on the command line.
