SYMPTOMS

If you try to use a Beta product key with build 2600 of Windows XP, you may receive the following error message:
Msoobe.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
If you view the data that the error report contains, the following error signature information is listed:

App name App version Module name Module version Offset
---------------------------------------------------------------
Msoobe.exe 5.1.2600.0 Msobmain.dll 5.1.2600.0 000169c9

CAUSE

The error message occurs because the License control is not initialized properly. This occurs if you are running Windows XP build 2600 (the released version of Windows XP), but you are using a Beta product key (which works only in builds 2536 and earlier). The License agent does not recognize the product key as a valid key.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, obtain and use a valid product key for the released version of Windows XP.

STATUS
