Valid RIS Image Is Not Displayed in Installation Choices (289638)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional

This article was previously published under Q289638

SUMMARY

If you create a Remote Installation Services (RIS) image, and you attempt to install it to a different hardware platform, the image is not displayed in the list of images available for installation.

MORE INFORMATION

The Riprep.sif file that was created when the image was uploaded contains a reference to the hardware abstraction layer (HAL) that the source computer was created on. If the target computer is not compatible with the source computer's HAL, the image is not displayed in the client computer's installation menu.

The Riprep.sif file contains a reference to the compatible HAL type that is similar to the following text:

[OSChooser]
HalName=halacpi.dll

NOTE: You are not able to manually modify the HAL listed in Riprep.sif; the RIS image does not install correctly if you modify the HAL reference. Support for hardware platforms that use different HALs requires that a reference image be created and uploaded for each HAL type.
