PI Error Message: Another Version of Microsoft Picture It! Is Already Installed (258610)

SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to upgrade to a later version of Microsoft Picture It!,
you may receive the following error message:
Another version of Microsoft Picture It! is already installed on this
computer. Click OK to uninstall the existing Picture It! installation.
When you click OK, nothing happens.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the installation of the previous version of
Picture It! is damaged. If this is true, Picture It! Setup is unable to
uninstall the previous version of Picture It!.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, uninstall the previous version of Picture It!.
To do this, use the following methods in the order in which they are
presented:
Use Picture It! Setup to Uninstall Picture It!
To use Picture It! Setup to uninstall Picture It!:
- Insert the CD-ROM for the previous version of Picture It!
into your CD-ROM drive. Press and hold down the SHIFT key
when you insert the CD-ROM to prevent Picture It! from
starting automatically.
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type the following line, and then
click OK
where drive is the drive letter of
your CD-ROM drive.
- Click Remove or Remove All to uninstall the
previous version of Picture It!
NOTE: If Setup starts in Install mode, use the Typical
installation option to install Picture It! Follow the instructions on
the screen until Setup is finished, and then repeat steps 2 through 4
to uninstall the previous version of Picture It!. - Install the later version of Picture It!.
If the issue continues to occur, proceed to the next method.
Manually Uninstall Picture It!
To manually uninstall Picture It!:
WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may
require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve
problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own
risk. - Double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop.
- Double-click the hard disk on which Picture It! is
installed.
- Double-click the Program Files folder.
- Double-click the Microsoft Picture It! folder.
- Right-click the My Pictures folder, point to Send
To, and then click My Documents.
- Right-click the Slide Shows folder, point to Send
To, and then click My Documents.
- Click the Back button on the toolbar.
- Right-click the Microsoft Picture It! folder, and
then click Delete. When you are prompted to confirm the
folder deletion, click Yes.
- Start Registry Editor.
- Delete the following registry keys (if they exist):
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Picture It!
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Picture It! Express
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Plus!98\Setup\PIE
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Picture It!
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Picture It! Express
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Plus!98\Setup\PIE
- Quit Registry Editor.
- Close all open windows on the desktop.
- Install the later version of Picture It!.
