ECO NUMBER: ALPCPU904_062 ----------- PRODUCT: OpenVMS Alpha Operating System -------- UPDATED PRODUCT: OpenVMS Alpha Operating System 6.2 ---------------- APPRX BLCK SIZE: 1621 ---------------- COVER LETTER 1 KIT NAME: ALPCPU904_062 2 KIT DESCRIPTION: 2.1 Version(s) of OpenVMS to which this kit may be applied: OpenVMS Alpha V6.1, V6.1-1H1, V6.1-1H2, V6.2, V6.2-1H1 2.2 Kits superseded by this kit: ALPCPU903_062 2.3 Files patched or replaced for OpenVMS Alpha V6.2, V6.2-1H1 o [SYS$LDR]SYS$CPU_ROUTINES_0902.EXE (new image) o [SYS$LDR]SYS$CPU_ROUTINES_0905.EXE (new image) o [SYS$LDR]SYS$CPU_ROUTINES_1802.EXE (new image) o [SYS$LDR]SYS$CPU_ROUTINES_1805.EXE (new image) o [SYS$LDR]SYS$CPU_ROUTINES_0602.EXE (new image) 2.4 Files patched or replaced for OpenVMS Alpha V6.1, V6.1-1H1, V6.1-1H2 o [SYS$LDR]SYS$CPU_ROUTINES_0902.EXE (new image) 3 PROBLEMS ADDRESSED IN ALPCPU904_062 KIT o There is a dependency between this kit and the AXPGUP01_062 remedial kit. When the ALPCPU904_062 remedial kit is installed on an OpenVMS Alpha V6.2 system the AXPGUP01_062 remedial kit must also be installed. If it is not, it is possible to experience bugchecks caused by machine checks while in kernal mode. -- COVER LETTER -- Page 2 28 February 1996 4 PROBLEMS ADDRESSED IN ALPCPU903_062 KIT o If a device's EISA configuration utility CFG file requests two or more IRQs, the device can crash an EISA_based system. This problem can occur on Digital AlphaServer 2100 5/250, AlphaServer 8400 5/275, AlphaStation 600 5/266, Digital AlphaServer 1000 4/200 and DEC 2000-300 platforms. 5 PROBLEMS ADDRESSED IN ALPCPU902_062 KIT FOR OPENVMS ALPHA V6.1, V6.1-1H1, V6.1-1H2, V6.2, V6.2-1H1 o Intermittent system failures caused by a correctable memory error which is being handled incorrectly. Failure is an INVEXCEPTN crash. 6 PROBLEMS ADDRESSED IN ALPCPU902_062 KIT FOR OPENVMS ALPHA V6.2-1H1 o When the system tries to queue a lock request against the associated resource, it encounters a corrupted R0 which causes a system crash. The corruption is the allocated pattern from the setting of POOL_CHECK (an ASCII "a" character, 61 Hex)." 7 PROBLEMS ADDRESSED IN ALPCPU901_062 KIT FOR OPENVMS V6.2 o Due to machine checks in PALmode while booting, AlphaServer 2100 systems with either a EV45/275 MHz CPU or an EV5 CPU installed may not boot. If you are seeing a machine check in PAL mode while booting, you must apply this patch. 8 INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS: The problem listed under "Problems addressed in ALPCPU901_062 kit for OpenVMS V6.2" causes your system to be unbootable. However, if you have not previously installed the ALPCPU901_062 kit, you must boot the system in order to install this kit. If your system has the machine check in PAL problem then there are two ways you can get the system to boot, that are outlined in the following installation procedures. INSTALLATION PROCEDURE 1 If the system has an EV45/275 MHz CPU board already installed perform the following steps: -- COVER LETTER -- Page 3 28 February 1996 0 Shutdown the system 0 Reboot, entering the following command at the boot prompt: >>> b -fl 0,10000 [boot device] For example: >>> b -fl 0,10000 dka0 0 Install the patch INSTALLATION PROCEDURE 2 If you are currently running an EV4 CPU then you are not susceptible to the machine check in PAL problem. However, if you are planning to upgrade to an EV45/275 MHz or an EV5 CPU then this kit must be installed before the new CPU board is installed in order for your system to boot properly. If you do install the new CPU before this kit, you must then boot using Installation Procedure 1 above Install this kit with the VMSINSTAL utility by logging into the SYSTEM account, and typing the following at the DCL prompt: @SYS$UPDATE:VMSINSTAL ALPCPU904_062 [location of the saveset] The saveset location may be a tape drive, or a disk directory that contains the kit saveset. **** NOTE **** If this kit is being installed on an OpenVMS Alpha V6.2 system, you must also install the AXPGUP01_062 kit or you may experience system instability. **************** System should be rebooted after successful installation of the kit. If you have other nodes in your VMScluster, that are AlphaServer 2100 systems, the patch should also be installed on those systems and the systems rebooted.
