KZPBA_V40D_BL13 Tru64 UNIX V4.0D SCSC I/O OPs Queue ECO Summary
TITLE: KZPBA_V40D_BL13 Tru64 UNIX V4.0D SCSC I/O OPs Queue ECO Summary

Copyright (c) COMPAQ Computer Corporation 2000. All rights reserved.

PRODUCT:    Tru64 UNIX [R] 4.0D
SOURCE:     COMPAQ Computer Corporation

ECO INFORMATION:

     ECO Name:  KZPBA_V40D_BL13
     ECO Kit Approximate Size: 296960 bytes
     Kit Applies To: Tru64 UNIX V4.0D with BL13 patch kit

ECO KIT SUMMARY:
==================

SCSI I/O operations are queued but not dispatched until another I/O
is queued.

PROBLEM SYMPTOM:
================

TRU64 UNIX installations with multi-CPU systems, experience performance
degradation and/or SCSI CAM errors after installing the BL13 Patch Kit.
With Tape I/O, (vdump and tar) you'll see numerous I/O Abort errors and
the tape subsystem may behave as if it detects media problems, resulting
in greater (~double) tape consumption for a given volume of backup. A
large number of ss_perform_timeouts are logged on the system indicating
a large number of I/O commands have timed out.

CONFIGURATIONS AFFECTED:
========================

This problem will occur on multiple-cpu TRU64 UNIX systems with multiple
Qlogic 1020/1040 controllers. Qlogic based controllers include the
KZPBA, KZPDA, and others. The easiest way to find out if this blitz
applies to a system is to do the following:

Look through the messages file...
# grep -i qlogic /usr/var/adm/messages

If you get anything like:
Nov 16 14:49:27 nodename vmunix: isp0: QLOGIC ISP1040C
Nov 16 14:49:28 nodename vmunix: isp1: QLOGIC ISP1040B/V2
Nov 16 14:49:28 nodename vmunix: isp2: QLOGIC ISP1040B/V2-
                                       Differential  Mode
Nov 16 14:49:29 nodename vmunix: isp3: QLOGIC ISP1020A

...then you have at least one Qlogic based controller.

If ...
  you have multiple controllers (isp0, isp1, ... not just isp0, isp0, isp0)
    and  you have multiple cpus
      (grep -i 'secondary cpu' /usr/var/adm/messages)
    and you are running V40D/E/F BL13,
  then the system is a definite candidate for this ECO.

This problem will occur on system configurations as described above
with the BL13 V4.0* patch releases installed:

  4.0D  DUV40DAS0005-19991007 Patch Kit 5
  4.0E  DUV40EAS0003-19991110 Patch Kit 3
  4.0F  DUV40FAS0002-19991116 Patch Kit 2
