DIGITAL DSNlink Version 2.2 for OpenVMS February 1998 Updated: 7/17/1998 Dear Customer, This letter contains a brief description of DIGITAL DSNlink Version 2.2 for OpenVMS. This letter explains how to find and download the save sets. WARNING Contact your DIGITAL Customer Support Center to verify that their DSNlink host is running DSNlink Version 2.2. Do NOT install DSNlink Version 2.2 for OpenVMS if the DIGITAL host has not yet installed DSNlink Version 2.2. The following are the topics in this letter. 1 About DSNlink Version 2.2 for OpenVMS 2 How to Download the Kit 2.1 Download the Kit from the World Wide Web 2.2 Download the Kit Via Anonymous FTP 3 After You Download the Kit 1 About DSNlink Version 2.2 for OpenVMS DSNlink is a service tool that allows DIGITAL customers to receive product support electronically from their Customer Support Center. Customers can submit service requests, copy files, and search technical support databases for articles and engineering change orders. DIGITAL specialists respond to service requests electronically and, if granted permission, can also log in to a customer's system to diagnose and correct problems remotely. You can install DSNlink Version 2.2 for OpenVMS on DIGITAL Alpha or VAX systems running OpenVMS Version 6.2 or higher. 1.1 What's New in DSNlink Version 2.2 The previous version of DSNlink on OpenVMS was Version 1.2. These are the major new features of DSNlink Version 2.2: o A DECwindows Motif graphical user interface uses menus and forms to access the DSNlink applications, utilities, and online help. o A new DSNlink communications transport replaces the DSNlink Network used in DSNlink Version 1.2. The new transport pro- vides interactive client/server communications over TCP/IP, DECnet, and X.25 protocols, and ISDN and PSTN modem lines. o You can use a single access number with DSNlink Versions 2.2 and 1.2. The previous restriction requiring separate access numbers has been lifted. o You can use multiple access numbers on any DSNlink node. o The Service Request application allows you to submit and aug- ment service requests. DIGITAL sends replies to your service requests to your OpenVMS mail account. You can augment the service request by replying to the mail message or by using the Service Request application's augment feature. You can also use the Service Request application to get lists of your open and closed service requests, supported products, and routing codes. Routing codes are names for the specialized groups that handle service requests. In DSNlink Version 1.2, mail addresses included the routing code. For example, ADA is the routing code in the mail address DSN%ADA. In DSNlink Version 2.2, you do not include the DSN% in the routing code. o In DSNlink Version 1.2, responses to service requests in- cluded all the work units associated with the service re- quest. In DSNlink Version 2.2, a response includes only the current work unit. All existing work units can be retrieved and saved using the Service Request application's Review feature. o DSNlink Version 1.2 differentiated between DANs (DSNlink application nodes) and DCNs (DSNlink communication nodes). The differentiation no longer exists. Communications can now be initiated from any node where DSNlink is installed. o New system management utilities allow you to restrict who uses DSNlink applications, test and troubleshoot the network, maintain your authentication keys, and modify and verify the DSNlink configuration. o By default, applications connect to the DIGITAL host interac- tively. Optionally, you can use command procedures to submit and augment service requests and to copy files in batch mode. o The online help for the DECwindows interface is displayed by the Mosaic browser. The help for the command line interface is displayed by the Lynx browser. Both browsers are included in the kit. Other documents you may want to print before installing DSNlink are in a documentation save set (see Section 3.0). There is no hardcopy documentation. o The DSNlink Version 2.2 for OpenVMS software is Year 2000 compliant. 2 How to Download the Kit The DSNlink for OpenVMS Version 2.2 kit can be downloaded from the DSNlink home page on the World Wide Web or by anonymous FTP.
