Introduction

Microsoft® Windows NT® Server NetShow™ Services enables Internet Providers and organizations to deliver the highest-quality audio and video at every bandwidth across the Internet or enterprise networks. NetShow Services consists of server components and tools for delivering audio, video, illustrated audio, animations, and other multimedia over networks. Users play advanced streaming format (ASF) content with the new Microsoft® Windows® Media Player, a universal player that plays most local and streamed media file types. NetShow Services empowers companies to deliver rich content to sell goods and services, provide news and entertainment, conduct training, and deliver corporate communications.

The latest release of NetShow Services features greatly enhanced video and audio quality that delivers the best user experience. Simplified setup, configuration, and administration of the NetShow Services and tools gives Internet Providers a reliable and cost-effective platform for hosting large amounts of content. And tighter integration with other Microsoft products makes it easy for companies to deploy multimedia-rich solutions. NetShow Services provides the foundation for building rich, interactive multimedia applications to sell goods and services. NetShow Services also provides news and entertainment, as well as the ability to conduct training and deliver corporate communications.

Installing NetShow Services


NetShow Services and Administration Install

NetShow Services and Administration Install


Use the Services Setup to install both NetShow Services and Administrator, or NetShow™ Administrator only.

Before you run Setup, log on to the computer using an account that has Windows NT administrative privileges.

To install NetShow Services and Administration Tools:

  1. Click on nsserver.exe (i386) or nsserver.exe (Alpha) and choose to "Open it" or "Save it to disk." If you choose to "Save it to disk," double-click on nsserver.exe in the directory you specified to start the installation process.
  2. NetShow server setup will start. Click Yes to accept the terms of the end-user license agreement.
  3. In the Welcome dialog box, click Next to continue. Then, in the NetShow Services Setup Requirements dialog box, click Next to continue.
  4. In the Installation Options dialog box, click Complete Installation to install NetShow Services NetShow Administrator, and Windows Media Player. Click Next to continue.
    - or -
    Click Administrative Tools Only to install NetShow Administrator and Windows Media Player - but not NetShow Services Click Next to continue.
  5. In the Installation Directory dialog box, select a directory for storing NetShow Services files. The default directory name is Program Files\NetShow Services. Click Next to continue.
  6. In the NetShow Content Directory dialog box, select a home directory for stored NetShow Services media files. The default directory name is Asfroot. Click Next to continue.
  7. In the NetShow Services Account dialog box, select a Windows NT account for NetShow Services. You can choose the default NetShowServices account, or another for which you provide account information. Click Finish to complete the installation. Setup copies NetShow Services files, installs services if you are installing NetShow Services, and completes the installation. When installation is complete, Setup provides a link in the NetShow Services group.

NetShow Tools Install


Use Tools Setup to install these tools:

  • NetShow™ Encoder for live streaming and producing ASF content.
  • NetShow™ T.A.G.™ Author for authoring illustrated audio content.
  • NetShow™ Plug-in for Adobe Premiere for output to ASF format from Adobe Premiere.
  • NetShow™ ASF Indexer utility for cutting ASF files, and editing properties, markers, and script commands.
  • ASF conversion tools for converting files from other formats.
  • Add-ins for converting and streaming slides from Microsoft® PowerPoint® 97.

    * Setup also installs codecs and documentation.

To install NetShow Tools:

  1. Click on nstools.exe (i386) or nstools.exe (Alpha) and choose to "Open it" or "Save it to disk." If you choose to "Save it to disk," double-click on nstools.exe in the directory you specified to start the installation process.
  2. NetShow Tools Setup starts. Click Yes to accept the terms of the end-user license agreement. Setup extracts files, and prepares for installation.
  3. In the Welcome dialog box, click Complete Install to install all tools
    - or -
    Click PowerPoint Add-ins only to install only Microsoft® PowerPoint® Presenter and Publish to ASF. Click Continue.
  4. Setup copies NetShow tools files to the Program files\NetShow Services\Tools directory, creating the directory if it doesn't exist. However, conversion tools, which are run from Command Prompt, are copied to the computer's Windows® 95 or Windows NT 4.0 directory. When Setup is complete, click OK.

Software Development Kit (SDK) Install:


  1. Click on nssdk.exe (i386) or nssdk.exe (Alpha) and choose to "Open it" or "Save it to disk." If you choose to "Save it to disk," double-click on nstools.exe in the directory you specified to start the installation process.
  2. NetShow SDK Setup starts. Click Yes to accept the terms of the end-user license agreement. Setup extracts files, and prepares for installation.
  3. Setup copies SDK files to the Program files\NetShow Services\SDK directory, creating the directory if it doesn't exist.

File Transfer Control Install


To install the NetShow File Transfer Control (i386 for Microsoft® Windows® 95/Windows NT® 4.0)

Click nsfile.exe (i386) or nsfile.exe (Alpha) and choose "Open it" or "Save it to disk." If you choose to "Save it to disk," double-click on nsfile.exe in the directory you specified to finish the installation process.
