Windows Media Player 6.0 Readme.txt (c)1998 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to the Windows Media Player. This document gives an overview of the product. Please see the following sections: - What's New - Known Issues ----------------------------------------------------------------- What's New ========== The Windows Media Player replaces the ActiveMovie control as well as the Microsoft NetShow Player. The new player takes over the class IDs of the previous players. After installing the new player, applications that used the old class IDs will continue to function normally. This version of the Windows Media Player enables playback of the following formats: Audio files MIDI MPEG files QuickTime files RealMedia Video files Windows Media files ----------------------------------------------------------------- Known Issues ============ - Video Distorted on Playback When using certain video display cards with Windows Media Player various redraw problems can occur when a clip is being played. The problem can manifest itself as blocks on the images, as purple or green streaks across the images, or as jittery motion. To correct this problem, change the YUV flipping property on the Windows Media Player property pages using the following procedure: 1. On the player, click Properties on the File menu. 2. On the Properties sheet, click the Advanced tab. 3. On the Advanced tab, select Video Renderer from the Filters in use box, and click Properties. 4. On the Filter Properties sheet, click the DirectDraw tab. 5. Clear the YUV Flipping check box, click OK, and then close the Properties sheets. - Error: Failed to Initialize on Boot When restarting your computer after installing the player, you may receive an Initializing IOS error. To correct this problem: 1.Boot Windows 95 in Safe mode or to a command prompt. 2.Perform one of the following two steps: - Edit the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files and disable any references to Smartdrv.exe. To disable a line, type "rem" (without quotation marks) at the beginning of the line. - Rename Smartdrv.exe to another name. 3.Restart your computer normally. For more information, please see support article: Q157924 Err Msg: "IOS Failed to Initialize" on Boot - Resgistration error after uninstall If your system contained ActiveMovie 1.0 prior to installing the new player, an uninstall of the player will display a registration error after the reboot of the system. The error, "Error registering OCX [path]\quartz.dll" can be dismissed and your system should continue to function normally. - Favorites not Working If you installed the Beta version of the Windows Media Player, you may encounter some links on the favorites menu that do not work. New links are populated during the install of the released version of the player. Please delete the Beta links. - Rebuilding applications with the Windows Media Player Control When an application, such as a Visual Basic application, that previously used the Active Movie of NetShow control is built on a machine that currently contains the Windows Media Player, the Windows Media Player must be distributed with the new application in order for the newly built application to work properly. - Failing to Initialize ddraw.dll when using Player Plugin for Netscape Netscape Navigator version 4.04, running on Windows NT, causes the DirectDraw dynamic link library to fail to initialize. When this happens, Navigator uses a different drawing DLL than ddraw.dll to display the video. This problem in not related to the Windows Media Player plug-in, and only happens in version 4.04 of Navigator running on Windows NT.
