************************************************************************* Using Systems Management Server to Install Windows NT 3.51 Service Pack 4 ************************************************************************* A Package Definition Format (PDF) file is provided to help automate the installation of Service Pack 4 (SP4). The PDF file is NT351SP4.PDF. These instructions enable you to use SMS to update Windows NT Workstation and Windows NT Server computers running version 3.51 to Service Pack 4. To use NT351SP4.PDF to distribute and install SP4: 1. Copy all directories and files from SP4 disk to a package source directory. To create the package source directory for SP4, create the package source directory (for example, D:\SP4 if you wanted to put the directory on the D: drive) on a server and share it with the same name (SP4). You then copy the directories and files from the SP4 disk to the package source directory (you can use the xcopy command to copy the files). ____ NOTE If you want to distribute only part of the Service Pack CD, make sure that the directory structure and directory names remain the same. This means that if you needed to update only computers with x86 processors, you could copy only the I386 directory to the root of the package source directory, for example, D:\SP4\i386 (and not the ALPHA, MIPS, or PowerPC directories). 2. Using the SMS Administrator, create the package for SP4 by importing NT351SP4.PDF and specifying the SP4 package source directory as the source directory for the package. To create the package, open the Packages window by choosing Open from the File menu and selecting Packages. Create a new package by choosing New from the File menu. In the Package Properties dialog box, click Import. Navigate to the package source directory you created in step 1. Select NT351SP4.PDF and click OK. The Package Properties dialog box now displays "Service Pack 4 for Microsoft Windows NT 3.51" in the Name box. Click on Workstations. In the Source Directory box, specify the server and sharename of the package source directory you created in step 1 (for example, \\myserver\SP4). Click Close. Click OK to close the Package Properties dialog box. The SP4 package now appears in the Packages window. You can now use the SP4 package to create Run Command On Workstation jobs to install SP4. _________ IMPORTANT Do not select System (Background) Task option for the upgrade command for the SP4 package. This option is not supported for SP4. 3. Use a query to find the computers to upgrade (by processor type). Because the update commands are based on processor type, it is recommended that you use a query to identify the computers that have the specified processor type. For example, here is the criteria for a query to find all Windows NT Server computers that have Windows NT version 3.51 and an x86 processor: MICROSOFT|OPERATING_SYSTEM|1.0:Operating System name is 'Microsoft Windows NT' AND MICROSOFT|OPERATING_SYSTEM|1.0:Version is '3.51' AND MICROSOFT|IDENTIFICATION|1.0:System Type is 'X86-based PC' 4. Using the SMS Administrator, create a Run Command On Workstation job to install SP4 on specified SMS computers. To create the job, open the Jobs window by choosing Open from the File menu and selecting Jobs. Create a new job by choosing New from the File menu. In the Job Properties dialog box, click Details. Select the computers to update using Job Target. You must select the computers by processor type. It is recommended that you use the query you created in step 3. Select the Run Workstation Command check box. Select the command for the processor type of the computers to update (For example, select Update x86 Windows NT Version 3.51 for x86-processor computers). Do not select the Mandatory After option. Click OK. Click OK again to close the Job Properties dialog box. At the target computers, the update command appears on the Package Command Manager (PCM) window. The command must be run by a user logged on with administrative privileges on that computer. The update command requires administrative privileges when it is updating system settings. The update command will reboot the system as soon as it is finished, unless an application is open with unsaved data. The user should be sure to save all data before running the Update job so the reboot will complete. When the job completes, SP4 will be installed on all target computers. _________ IMPORTANT Do not select the Mandatory After option for the job for the SP4 package. This option is not supported for SP4. ____ NOTE Although you cannot use SMS to update earlier versions of Windows NT 3.51 to SP4 completely unattended or using the Package Command Manager service, SP4 contains changes that will allow update to later service packs using the Mandatory After and System (Background) Task options. This means that if you have SP4 installed, you will be able to install later service packs in unattended mode, with the PCM service, or as a forced (mandatory) job.
