Release Notes for RDFG043, Remote Device Facility (RDF) Version 4.3G Kit Name: SAVESET RDFG043.A to be applied to ECO's: SLSE01029F ABSE01032 Kit Description: This kit contains a version update of the Remote Device Facility (RDF) software. This update RDF V4.3G supersedes RDF V4.3A which was included with Storage Library System V2.9D/F and Archive Backup System V3.2 and V3.1A. Remote Device Facility is a trademark of Touch Technologies, Inc. who developed and maintain the software. This kit may be applied to systems running the following version(s) of Storage Library System (SLS) or Media and Device Management Services (MDMS): SLS Versions ABS Versions ------------ ------------ SLS V2.9D ABS V3.1A MDMS V2.9D MDMS V3.1A SLS V2.9F ABS V3.2 MDMS V2.9F MDMS V3.2 The kit automatically installs the correct images for your type of system (VAX or Alpha). For the first time we are providing a single installable kit that can be used with either the SLS or ABS product. Please refer to the installation section of this document for changes to the procedure. Only apply the kit to systems where either SLS/MDMS 2.9X or ABS/MDMS 3.1X and later have been installed. MDMS 2.9X does not include the backup and restore functionality of SLS. MDMS 3.1X and later can be installed separately to support the following products: Archive/Backup System (ABS) Versions V3.1X and V3.2, Hierarchical Storage Management (HSM) Versions V3.1X and V3.2 Only when licensed with the use of an existing SLS or ABS license, or Running RDF with a separately purchased RDF license from TTI, Touch Technologies, Inc. SYMPTOM OR FOOTPRINT: The RDF client would either hang or cause the system to crash with the following error in the RDF.LOG files; tape - change to 1 (iosb = 0, 0, 0 - Function = 602e8) tape_device: RDV:276 [05/08-11:00:12.49] (*ERR) ZEROSTSTAPE: ZERO Status from tape - change to 1 (iosb = 0, 0, 0 - Function = 602e8) SOLUTION: Resolved in RDF 4.3G *********************************************************************** *********************************************************************** PROBLEM 2: RDF .exe image files were not being updated to show the correct version. SYMPTOM OR FOOTPRINT: When performing the following VMS command, $ ANALYZE/IMAGE rdf_filename.EXE on any of the RDF executables, the image file identification would report showing the wrong version of "V4.1" and was never updated with the correct version as follows; Press RETURN to continue, or enter a period (.) for next file: > Image Identification Information > image name: "RDSERVER_V71" > image file identification: "V4.1" > link date/time: 1-MAR-2000 13:08:15.14 > linker identification: "V11-39" > > Press RETURN to continue, or enter a period (.) for next file: > Image Identification Information > image name: "RDCLIENT_V71" > image file identification: "V4.1" > link e/time: 1-MAR-2000 13:08:13.07 > linker identification: V11-39" SOLUTION: Resolved in RDF 4.3G ************************************************************************ PROBLEM 3: Too many OPCOM messages would overflow the buffer while using previous versions of RDF. SYMPTOM OR FOOTPRINT: The RDClient process would eventually ACCVIO due to too many large OPCOM messages being passed. SOLUTION: Resolved in RDF 4.3G ************************************************************************ RESTRICTIONS: o Reboot will be required for clients. o AXP/VMS V7.3 customer's must be running RDF version 4.3G on both client and server. o RDSERVERS must be running RDF versions as current as or later versions as the RDCLIENTS. However, it is strongly recommended for both RDSERVERS and RDCLIENTS to be running the same versions of RDF. o If the RDCLIENT is an AXP/VMS V7.2+, the RDSERVER must be an AXP/VMS V7.2+ due to the new multidensity code in the AXP/VMS V7.2+. Otherwise, compaction (/MEDIA=COMPACTION) may not be supported. ************************************************************************ NEW FEATURES/FUNCTIONALITY: No new features, just bug-fixes. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Load and mount the media that contains the software kit. 2. Invoke VMSINSTAL procedure. You will have to invoke the following command. $@sys$update:vmsinstal RDFG043 location where location is the tape device (or directory) which contains the saveset 3. If you see the following messages %VMSINSTAL-W-ACTIVE, The following processes are still active: --- --- * Do you want to continue anyway [NO]? Enter Y and press 4. Confirm the state of the system backup: * Are you satisfied with the backup of your system disk [YES]? Press Compaq recommends you to perform a full backup of your system disk before Installing any software product. 5. If you did not include the location of the software to be mounted in the VMSINSTAL command line, identify the location of the software to be mounted: * Where will the distribution volumes be mounted: You must enter the tape drive, local disk or a remote disk. Enter appropriate information and press 6. Verify that RDF is shutdown on the system. The installation procedure will display the following message. * WARNING * ****************************************************************** * Before installing this kit, you should ensure that RDF is * * not running on this node or any other node if a VMScluster. * ***************************************************************** * Do you now wish to proceed with this installation [No]? In case RDF is shutdown Enter Y and . In other case press to terminate. 7. You will be prompted to specify the installation path. * Do you wish to install in SLS path or ABS/MDMS path. Specify SLS or MDMS [SLS] In case you are using SLS/MDMS 2.9X then Press . In case you are using ABS/MDMS 3.X then Type MDMS and Press 8. At this point the installation will proceed further without any operator intervention. Important Information: After installing this kit, it is necessary to restart SLS or ABS for all of the changes to take effect. NOTICE: After installing this ECO on either Alpha or VAX systems, you MUST reboot your system before using the Remote Device Facility. For a mixed-architecture configuration or other heterogeneous VMScluster configurations, the kit must be installed on each node having its own SLS$ROOT or MDMS$ROOT directory structure.
