ECO NUMBER: AXPGUP01_062 ----------- PRODUCT: OpenVMS Alpha Operating System -------- UPDATED PRODUCT: OpenVMS Alpha Operating System 6.2 ---------------- APPRX BLCK SIZE: 1925 ---------------- COVER LETTER 1 KIT NAME: AXPGUP01_062 2 KIT DESCRIPTION: 2.1 Version(s) of OpenVMS to which this kit may be applied: OpenVMS Alpha V6.2, V6.2-1H1 2.2 Kits superseded by this kit: None 2.3 Files patched or replaced: o [SYSLIB]DECW$ICBM.EXE (new image) o [SYSLIB]DECW$SERVER_DDX_ATIMACH64.EXE (new image) o [SYSLIB]DECW$SERVER_DDX_S3.EXE (new image) o [SYS$LDR]SYS$GQDDRIVER.EXE (new image) o [SYS$LDR]SYS$GQSDRIVER.EXE (new image) o [SYS$LDR]SYS$IKBDRIVER.EXE (new image) o [SYSMGR]DECW$AUTOCONFIG.DAT (new image) o [SYSMGR]DECW$DEVICE_CONFIG_GQ.COM (new image) 3 PROBLEMS ADDRESSED IN AXPGUP01_062 KIT o This kit contains the images required to provide X11/Motif support for the ATI Mach64 ISA Graphics Adapter and S3 Trio32/64 PCI Graphics Adapter on V6.2 based OpenVMS Alpha Systems. This kit also contains a new keyboard driver to correct problems with the system bell. After this remedial kit is installed you should perform the following steps: -- COVER LETTER -- Page 2 28 February 1996 o Shut down the system. o If applicable, you should install the ATI Mach64 ISA card or S3 Trio32/64 PCI card (the cards may also be installed at a later time). o If you are using the ATI Mach64 card, you must configure the card from the console. To do this follow these steps: o Power on the system. o For ISA systems, at the >>> prompt, type: >>> isacfg -mk -slot 3 -handle isa--vga -etype 1 -ena 1 In this example above the ISA slot number is 3. When you enter the command on your system, the ISA slot number can be any currently unused slot. The "isacfg -all" command will display complete information about current ISA devices, and the SHOW CONFIG command will give a summary. You will then be prompted to type INIT. NOTE: If you remove the Mach64 card at a later date, you should remember to use the "ISACFG -RM -SLOT 3" command to remove the entry from the ISA information (in this example the slot number is 3, on your system it is the slot that you assigned the card to). o For EISA systems: You must run the ECU (EISA Configuration Utility) before the card will be recognized. You must select the "Add or Delete Card" option, pick an unused slot, and select the "Standard VGA Controller" option. Follow the directions given by the ECU to save the information and exit. The device will be identified as a "PHI8041" generic ID. The autoconfiguration code will then probe for the Mach64. o Boot the system. If your system has previously been setup to run X11/Motif, the Motif login box should appear after the boot sequence logs off. If system parameters are too low, you may need to perform an AUTOGEN, the Motif startup procedures will inform you of any requirements. If you have not previously installed Motif, install it now, following the normal Motif installation procedure. NOTE: The SYSGEN parameter VIRTUALPAGECOUNT must be at least 400000 for the X11 display server to function. A warning message and instructions will be displayed if -- COVER LETTER -- Page 3 28 February 1996 there is not enough virtual pages available. After installation, you may tailor the screen resolution and other parameters. If Motif does not start, check to make sure that Motif has been installed, and the WINDOW_SYSTEM sysgen parameter is set to 1. If the system indicates that no graphics were found (or a SHOW DEV G does not display any devices), then you probably need to run the ECU or issue the ISACFG command from the console. ATI/S3 Known Restrictions: o The default pixel resolution is set to 1024 x 768. This resolution is available on most multi-sync monitors. These options support both lower, as well as higher resolutions (2 megabytes DRAM min.). To change the resolution rename: SYS$MANAGER:DECW$PRIVATE_SERVER_SETUP.TEMPLATE to SYS$MANAGER:DECW$PRIVATE_SERVER_SETUP.COM and add the following lines to the appropriate place following the instructions inside the SYS$MANAGER:DECW$PRIVATE_SERVER_SETUP.COM file: $ DECW$XSIZE_IN_PIXELS == 1280 $ DECW$YSIZE_IN_PIXELS == 1024 o Lower resolutions of 640x480 and 800x600 are also available, but are not recommended since many X11/Motif applications make assumptions about minimum screen size. ATI Known Restrictions: 0 When using 1024 x 768 resolution, performance can be enhanced by defining the logical: $ DEFINE/SYSTEM DECW$SERVER_FIFO_LOW_WATER_MARK 4 in the private server setup file (see above). If random line flashing occurs, increase the value, and restart the server. The default value of 8 is required for 1280x1024 operation. S3 Known Restrictions: 0 S3 Trio32/64 adapters are currently supported on the primary PCI bus only. -- COVER LETTER -- Page 4 28 February 1996 4 INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS: Install this kit with the VMSINSTAL utility by logging into the SYSTEM account, and typing the following at the DCL prompt: @SYS$UPDATE:VMSINSTAL AXPGUP01_062 [location of the saveset] The saveset location may be a tape drive, or a disk directory that contains the kit saveset. System MUST be rebooted after successful installation of the kit. See the post installation instructions listed above. [R] Motif is a registered trademark of the Open Software Foundation, Inc.
