NAME

lprsetup.dat, lbin - Printer configuration files

SYNOPSIS

known:\ :PD=\n\ device...device\n\ . . . # # comment device_id:\ : printcap_symbol:\ . . . printer description\n\n>

DESCRIPTION

The lprsetup.dat file contains configuration data for all printers supported by Tru64 UNIX that have special options such as duplex printing. Although it is possible to configure most serial printers to provide basic text output by using the default printer settings, the configuration files enable you to use special printer options such as support for PostScript printing. They also enable you to access hardware features such as alternate feed and destination trays. (Parallel printing is not supported). You use the PrintConfig graphical interface, the lprsetup program or the SysMan utilities to configure printers. When you run one of these configuration programs, you are prompted to enter the name of a configuration data set for the printer that you want to install. The configuration program then reads the data set for the specified printer and adds it to the /etc/printcap file. The /etc/printcap file contains the runtime printer configuration record. For example, the /usr/lbin directory contains the filter files required for the printer. The printer configuration data set specifies a path to the appropriate filter and this path is set as a printcap flag during printer installation and configuration. You should not modify the lprsetup.dat file. It is a system-owned file that is updated regularly with new printer data sets during each release of the operating system. If you modify this file manually, it might not update correctly during subsequent update installation procedures. The lprsetup.dat file contains the following fields: known A list of all known devices that are defined in this file. PD= A short description of the printer. device_id The string that identifies the device, from the tables that follow. This is usually similar to the name of the printer on the casing, such as ln17ps printcap_symbol A list of flags used to set printer characteristics in the /etc/printcap file. The entry for each printer contains a number of printcap_flag fields. Refer to printcap(4) for a description of the printcap symbols. printer description One or more lines of text that provide a brief description of the device and its capabilities. The data sets are listed in the following tables, organized by printer type. The abbreviations used in the tables are defined as follows: A4 Supports ISO A4 paper size cpi Characters per inch DM Dot-matrix printer IBMP IBM Proprinter L2 Level 2, a version of PostScript L3 printer on floppy diskette or CD-ROM. The filter files are located in the /usr/lbin directory. The operating system ships with a number of print filters which support the following types of printer: · Current model Compaq printers such as lg31of. · Legacy model Compaq printers such as ln08rof. · Specific third-party printers such as Epson and certain Hewlett- Packard laserjet printers such as epsonof and hplaser4psof. · Generic text (line) printers such as ansi_2of · Local-language character set printers are supported using internationalized filters. Refer to i18n_printing(5) for more information. This set of filters is constantly updated with each new release of the operating system. If you do not find a specific print filter for your printer make and model in the /usr/lbin directory, contact the manufacturer and request an appropriate print filter. The operating system also supports the portable Adobe PostScript Printer Description (PPD) filters shipped with many makes and models of printer. See ppdof(8) for more information.
