Viewing the DIGITAL UNIX Reference Pages with webman
To return to webman
, use the browser's
[Back] button.
The webman
viewer shows you a page with a search field and
a list of the available reference page directories:
-
The search field allows you to find reference pages by name or by
entering any word that might be associated with the reference pages you
are interested in. The results of a search are presented as a table
with hypertext links so that you can go directly to the reference pages
that you want to see.
-
The list of directories shows all of the reference page areas that are
available on the system that is serving this information to you.
The directory list includes the available DIGITAL standard reference
page areas, and it can also include custom locations that have been set
up by your system administrator and enabled by your MANPATH
environment variable. The standard locations are:
-
/usr/share/man
-
/usr/dt/share/man
/usr/share/doclib/online/DOCS/HTML/usr/share/man
/usr/share/doclib/online/DOCS/HTML/usr/dt/share/man
The order in which directories are listed is determined by
webman
. See the end of this page for a description of directory contents.
When you click on a directory from the list, webman
presents
an alphabetical listing of the contents of that directory. If a given
reference page is listed twice, the two files are:
-
First, an uncompressed file. Typically, this file has been edited by
your system administrator to reflect local information.
-
Second, a compressed file. This file is the original file supplied by
DIGITAL.
When you choose a file from the directory listing, webman
displays the selected reference page.
Within a reference page display, cross-references to other reference
pages are hypertext links. A given hypertext link can resolve to more
than one possible file. The search order is as follows:
-
Directories are searched in the order defined by the initial list. As
soon as a file is found that matches the cross-reference, the search
ends and
webman
displays that file.
-
Within a given directory, if there are both an uncompressed file and a
compressed file, the uncompressed file is given preference.
Descriptions of Reference Page Areas
/usr/share/man
-
Contains DIGITAL standard base system reference pages. Depending on
what selection of subsets is installed on the server system, this area
might include all of the reference pages; it might not be present at all
if no reference pages have been installed. If any layered products have
been installed, this area might also include reference pages for those
layered products.
/usr/dt/share/man
-
Contains Common Desktop Environment reference pages. Depending on what
selection of subsets is installed on the server system, this area might
include all of the reference pages; it might not be present at all if no
CDE reference pages have been installed.
/usr/share/doclib/online/DOCS/HTML/usr/share/man
-
Contains DIGITAL standard base system reference pages. This area is a
duplicate of the complete set of files that DIGITAL supplies for
/usr/share/man
, and it is present if the documentation
CD-ROM is installed.
/usr/share/doclib/online/DOCS/HTML/usr/dt/share/man
-
Contains Common Desktop Environment reference pages. This area is a
duplicate of the complete set of files that DIGITAL supplies for
/usr/dt/share/man
, and it is present if the documentation
CD-ROM is installed.
