GNU tar is a much improved version of the standard tar. It supports compression, sparse files, multiple volumes, and much more.

Note: version 1.13.25 is a pre-release version; the official maintainers have not declared it a stable public release. We include it here because it many new features and bug fixes, and seems to be relatively stable.
Note: this build contains a fix for the directory traversal vulnerability described in CAN-2001-1267 and CAN-2002-0399.
