Choosing to create a hot-spare or standby hot-spare drive

Hot-spare and standby hot-spare drives supply additional protection to a RAID configuration. If a physical drive failed in configurations other than RAID level-0 and -00, the hot-spare drive can automatically replace the failed physical drive. Subsequently, the logical drive can be rebuilt automatically.

Note: You cannot use hot-spare drives with RAID level-0 or -00.

You can create a hot-spare drive in the Configuration wizard when you first configure the ServeRAID controller. However, if you did not choose to create a hot-spare drive at that time, you can do so later.
