abstract

This version of TRXNET.LAN v2.0 fixes a bottleneck problem on a LAN with multiple file servers. If a server goes down on the LAN, workstations trying to communicate with the server through a bridge will execute a retry command, and clog the network. Symptoms of this problem include Abort Retries at the workstations.

installation

1) Copy TRXNET.LAN to your NetWare system start-up area (SYS:SYSTEM and/or DOS partition). Be sure to rename the old version of the TRXNET driver.

2) Load the driver as you normally would on your system.

Note: If needed, the Max Retry default may be changed during load time.

This README file of TRXNET.EXE accompanies the TRXNET.LAN for NetWare v3.1x.

Problem:
This version of TRXNET.LAN v2.00 fixes a bottleneck problem on a LAN with mutilple file servers. If a server goes down on the LAN, workstations trying to communicate with the server through a bridge will retry, and "clog" the network. Symptoms of this problem include Abort Retries at the workstations. Additionally, users may be unable to login because the Packet Receive Buffers have reached the Maximum limit.

Solution:
This new TRXNET.LAN changes the MaxRetries from a default of 10 to 0. There is little need to keep retrying a send to a node that does not respond in any way to the Free Buffer Inquiry. While the driver/card is retrying the packet, all other sends to the driver are being queued. Thus, the Maximum Receive Buffer count may be driven up on busy networks where packets are being routed internally to the ARCNET card. This may cause a bottleneck in the system.

Installation:
1) Copy TRXNET.LAN to your NetWare system start-up area (SYS:SYSTEM and/or DOS partition). Be sure to rename the old version of the TRXNET driver.

2) Load the driver as you normally would on your system.

Note: If needed, the Max Retry default may be changed during load time.
