2.0 Documentation
***************
For information about what NLS and how NLS works, refer to www.novell.com/deployment/nls.
For information about how a particular product uses NLS, refer to that product's documentation.
For information about SetupNLS.EXE, use the help system in that utility.
3.0 Prerequisites
***************
Install NLS 5.02 only on the following:
NetWare 5.1 servers.
NetWare 5 servers running NetWare 5 Support Pack 2 or later.
NetWare 4.11 servers running NetWare 4 Support Pack 6.
NetWare 4.2 servers.
Do not install NLS 5.02 on NetWare 3 or NetWare 4.10 servers.
If you have a mixed-server environment consisting of NetWare 4 and NetWare 5 servers, install NLS 5.02 on one or more NetWare 4 servers and on one or more NetWare 5 servers. By running on NetWare 4.11 and 4.2 servers, NLS can properly operate in mixed server-version environments.
Additionally, other Novell products, such as BorderManager, require NLS before they can run on NetWare 4.11 servers.
4.0 Guidelines
***************
For User Access Licensing, install license certificates in or above the user's context instead of in the server's context. Consider which uses must access a license certificate and then install the license certificates as high in the NDS tree as is practical.
If you have WAN links, ensure that users at remote sites have easy access to license units. Distribute license certificates to remote sites and install the certificates in the remote site's NDS context.
5.0 Installing NLS 5.02
***************
5.1 Use SetupNLS.EXE
This release includes new methods for installing NLS. To install NLS, use the new SetupNLS.EXE file (not SETUPNLS.NLM). SetupNLS.EXE provides the only way to install NLS 5.02 accurately and completely.
Run SetupNLS at one of the following workstations connected to the target network:
Novell Client for Windows 95/98
Novell Client for Windows NT
5.2 Installing on NetWare 5.0 Servers
Complete the following steps to install NLS 5.01 and replace earlier license certificates (for the Server Connection License model) with license certificates for the new model (User Access Licensing).
1. Copy the .ZIP file to a local drive and unzip the file. The resulting directory contains
the following:
The NI folder
The Licenses folder
SETUPNLS.EXE
READ_ME.DOC (and .TXT)
2. Run SETUPNLS.EXE.
SETUPNLS.EXE installs NLS 5.02. It does not install NetWare (or other products) or
license certificates.
3. Delete old NetWare 5 license certificates.
IMPORTANT: Delete the server base license certificate (Novell+NetWare 5 Server+500)
and the server connection license certificate (for example, SN:9050000001).
4.Add User Access Licensing certificates for your product.
Using the Tools menu in NetWare Administrator, install license certificates
from the Licenses diskette provided with your product.
5.3 Installing on NetWare 4 Servers
At this time, NetWare 4 does not use NLS license certificates. However, NetWare 4 supports products, which use NLS, and NLS license certificates.
1. Copy the .ZIP files to a local drive and unzip the file. The resulting
directory contains the following:
The NI folder
The Licenses folder
SETUPNLS.EXE
READ_ME.DOC (and .TXT)
2. Prepare the NetWare 4 environment by doing the following:
Upgrade a NetWare 4.11 or NetWare 4.2 server to NetWare 5.
Update all or selected NetWare 4.11 and NetWare 4.2 servers (update NDS,
identify partitions and servers, install NetWare 4 Support Pack 6 or later on
NetWare 4.11 servers).
More information is available at www.novell.com/deployment/nls.
3. Run SETUPNLS.EXE
Refer to the help system in SETUPNLS.EXE.
4. Continue using existing licenses.
6.0 Known Issues
********************
6.1 DS 0.0 Error
SetupNLS provides a .LOG file. If the LOG file contains an error that the DS version is 0.0, there is a connectivity problem. Try installing NLS 5.01 again.
6.2 Running SetupNLS.EXE from a Local Drive
If you experience problems while running SetupNLS.EXE from a network drive, copy SetupNLS.EXE to a local drive and run it from there.
6.3 If the system erroneously reports duplicate licenses
If your system erroneously reports that duplicate licenses are installed in the NDS tree, consider the following possible cause and solutions.
Possible cause: In a mixed NetWare 4 and NetWare 5 environment, you installed a NetWare 5 license certificate, deleted it, and then reinstalled it elsewhere in the NDS tree. When the 4.0 DUP dredge walks the tree, the dredge encounters the deleted certificate and considers it a duplicate.
Solution: If that license certificate was the only certificate in the License Container object, delete the License Container object where the certificate was installed and deleted. (Don't delete the License Container object if it contains other license certificates.)
Solution: Deploy NLS 5.02 to all NetWare 4 and NetWare 5 servers in the NDS tree.
