SYMPTOMS ======== When you are connected to MSN, The Microsoft Network, you may receive an error message similar to one of the following error messages when you attempt to retrieve e-mail using Outlook Express: An error occurred loading the Distributed Password Authentication Components. Account: 'MSN Mail', Server: 'pop3.email.msn.com', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '.', Port: 110, Secure (SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC00. Unable to logon to server using secure password authentication Components. Account: 'MSN Mail', Server: pop3.email.msn.com', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '.', Port: 110, Secure (SSL): No, Error Number: 0x800CCC18 You may also receive the following error message when you attempt to connect to an MSN Premier Web page: Access denied. CAUSE ===== This behavior can occur if the Windows 98 registry contains incorrect information. RESOLUTION ========== To resolve this issue, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click "Files or folders". 2. In the Named box, type "msapsspc.dll msnsspc.dll" (without the quotation marks), and then click Find Now. 3. In the list of found files, right-click each file, and then click Delete. Continue until the list of found files is empty. 4. Close the Find window. 5. Extract new copies of the Msapsspc.dll and Msnsspc.dll files from your original Windows 98 CD-ROM into the Windows\System folder using the System File Checker tool. To start the System File Checker tool, click Start, click Run, type "sfc.exe" (without the quotation marks) in the Open box, and then click OK. If necessary, modify the value data of the SecurityProviders value to include "msapsspc.dll, msnsspc.dll" (without the quotation marks). 3. Quit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.
