SYMPTOMS
========

When you attempt to connect to MSN, The Microsoft Network, you may receive
the following error message:

   Cannot establish modem connection.

CAUSE
=====

This behavior can occur if the Dial-Up Networking connections you use
to connect to MSN are damaged or contain incorrect information about the
modem you use to connect to MSN.

RESOLUTION
==========

To resolve this issue, re-create the MSN Dial-Up Networking connections.

To do this, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click
   Dial-Up Networking.

   NOTE: If you are using Microsoft Windows 98, click Start, point to
   Programs, point to Accessories, point to Communications, and then click
   Dial-Up Networking.

2. Right-click any of the following Dial-Up Networking connections, and
   then click Delete:

    - The Microsoft Network
    - The Microsoft Network (Backup)

3. Repeat step 2 for each of the connections listed above.

4. Close the Dial-Up Networking window.

5. Right-click the MSN or the The Microsoft Network icon on the desktop,
   and then click Connection Settings.

6. Click Access Numbers.

7. In the Service Type box, click "Internet And The Microsoft Network."

8. Click Change next to the Primary box.

9. In the Country box, click your country.

10. In the State/Region box, click your state or region.

11. In the Access Numbers box, click the appropriate primary access number
   for your area.

12. Click OK.

13. Click Change next to the Backup box.

14. In the Country box, click your country.

15. In the State/Region box, click your state or region.

16. In the Access Numbers box, click an appropriate backup access number
   for your area.

17. Click OK.
