DOCUMENT:Q175917 21-AUG-1998 [msnetwork] TITLE :How to Configure Outlook Express for More Than One MSN Account PRODUCT :The Microsoft Network PROD/VER:WINDOWS:2.5 OPER/SYS:WINDOWS KEYWORDS:msnmail kbmsnkbfaq ====================================================================== --------------------------------------------------------------------- The information in this article applies to: - The Microsoft Network, version 2.5 --------------------------------------------------------------------- SUMMARY ======= This article describes how to configure Microsoft Outlook Express for use with two or more accounts on MSN, The Microsoft Network. Outlook Express is an e-mail and newsgroup reader program. MORE INFORMATION ================ To configure Outlook Express for use with multiple MSN accounts, all of the accounts must be migrated (or converted) from MSN Classic mail to MSN Internet Mail. After you migrate your accounts, you can configure Outlook Express to work with the accounts. Mail Migration -------------- If the accounts are currently configured for MSN Classic mail, follow these steps to migrate them to MSN Internet Mail: 1. After you install MSN 2.5, connect to MSN using the logon information for your first account. 2. Follow the instructions on the screen to convert your mail account to Internet Mail. 3. Disconnect from MSN. 4. Connect to MSN using the logon information for your second MSN account. 5. To convert your second MSN account to Internet Mail, start your Web browser and connect to the following address: http://setup.msn.com/membersonly/config/default.asp 6. Follow the instructions on the screen to convert the mail account to Internet Mail. 7. Repeat steps 3-6 for any additional MSN accounts. NOTE: This process migrates your accounts to use the new MSN Internet Mail servers. It also automatically configures Outlook Express to use the last account you converted. By default, this account is named MSN Mail. Configuring Outlook Express for Multiple Accounts ------------------------------------------------- 1. Double-click the Outlook Express icon on the desktop. 2. On the Tools menu, click Accounts. 3. Click the Mail tab. 4. Click Add, and then click Mail. 5. In the Display Name box, type the name you want to appear in the From field when you send e-mail with this account, and then click Next. 6. In the E-mail Address box, type your MSN e-mail address, and then click Next. 7. In the "My incoming mail server is a server" box, click POP3. 8. In the "Incoming mail (POP3 or IMAP) server" box, type the following server address: pop3.email.msn.com 9. In the "Outgoing mail (SMTP) server" box, type the following server address: smtp.email.msn.com NOTE: If you gain access to MSN through a third-party ISP or local area network (LAN), type the following server address: secure.smtp.email.msn.com 10. Click Next. 11. Click "Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA)," and then click Next. 12. Type your MSN Member ID in the Internet Mail Account Name box, and then click Next. NOTE: Using your MSN Member ID as your Outlook Express e-mail account name allows you to easily identify which Outlook Express e-mail account to use with a particular MSN user account. 13. Click "I will establish my Internet connection manually," and then click Next. 14. Click Finish. 15. Repeat steps 4-14 for additional accounts. When you are finished adding accounts, click Close, and then quit Outlook Express. Checking Mail for Multiple MSN Accounts --------------------------------------- MSN cannot download from two accounts during the same MSN session. This is because MSN caches the user logon information. To clear the user logon information from one account you must close all MSN programs, and then log on to MSN using the second account. 1. Double-click the Outlook Express icon on the desktop. 2. On the Tools menu, click Send And Receive. 3. Click the e-mail account you want to use. 4. In the MSN Sign-In screen, type the appropriate Member ID and password for the account you clicked, and then click Connect. NOTE: If Outlook Express is set to automatically check for e-mail, the MSN Sign-In screen appears when you start Outlook Express. If this happens, type the appropriate Member ID and password for the account you selected, and then click Connect. 5. After you finish checking mail on the first account, close all MSN programs (such as MSN Program Viewer, Outlook Express, and MSN Quick View), and then disconnect from MSN. 6. Repeat steps 1-5 to check mail on your other MSN mail accounts.
