SYMPTOMS
========

If you use the Japanese NEC PC-9800 series of computers with MSN, The
Microsoft Network, you may receive the following error message when you
attempt to connect:

   Cannot establish network connection to Internet - NEC PC-98 series

CAUSE
=====

The following NEC PC-9800 computers have an 8250 UART chip on
communications port 1, which makes it difficult to connect to the
Internet with ISDN or 28,800 bps modems:

 - PC-9821 Cx2 / Cb2 / Cx3 / Cb3 / V7
 - PC-9821 Xt13 / Xa12 / Xa10 / Xb10 / Xa9 / Xa7 / Xa7e / Xe10
 - PC-9821 V10 (not the internal modem model C or D)
 - PC-9801 BX4
 - PC-9821 Na12 / Na9 / Na7 / Nx / Ne3 / Nd2 / Lt2

RESOLUTION
==========

Obtain the updated SER8251F.VXD driver from NEC. This driver is available
from the following Web page:

   http://www.microsoft.co.jp/win95/modules/98_158.htm

Some of the models listed in this article have a second communications
port with a 16550 UART chip, which should work better for connecting to
MSN.
