Update to TCP/IP Utilities & Windows Release Notes (98957)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft LAN Manager 2.2

This article was previously published under Q98957

SUMMARY

If you follow the LAN Manager 2.2 release notes instructions for using Microsoft TCP/IP Utilities with Windows for Workgroups, the utilities load correctly, but you get an "Unrecognized command in CONFIG.SYS" error message; if you don't follow them, you get a "Network Modules not loaded" error message.

You can avoid this by using a "Comment" command in CONFIG.SYS.

This workaround works on MS-DOS 5.0.

MORE INFORMATION

The release notes instruct you to place this line in the CONFIG.SYS file:
   remdevice=c:\network\protman\protman.dos /i:c:\network

where "network" represents the WfW root directory.

This statement generates an error message because "remdevice" is not a valid command for CONFIG.SYS.

The COMMENT statement is used to specify a certain character to indicate a remark line, thus keeping MS-DOS from generating this error message. Instead of adding the "remdevice" line in CONFIG.SYS, use the COMMENT command and add these lines:
   COMMENT !
   ! c:\network\protman\protman.dos /i:c:\network
