PRJ: How to Open a Microsoft Project File in Microsoft Access (97699)

SUMMARY

To transfer a file from Microsoft Project to Microsoft Access, save the file from Microsoft Project in one of the following file formats and import it into a Microsoft Access table:

   dBASE III (DBF 3)
   dBASE IV (DBF 4)
   text tab (TXT)
   comma separated value (CSV)
   Lotus (WKS, WK1, and WK3)
   FoxPro Tables (DBF)
				


NOTE: The FoxPro Tables file format is available in Microsoft Project version 4.0, but not in earlier versions of Microsoft Project.

To save a file in dBASE IV format from Microsoft Project:

  1. Open your data file in Microsoft Project.
  2. On the File Menu, click Save As.
  3. In the Save File As Type list click dBASE IV.
To import a dBASE file into Microsoft Access:

  1. Start Microsoft Access and open an existing database or create a new one.
  2. On the File menu, click Import.
  3. Select dBASE IV as the Data Source.
  4. Change to the directory where you saved the Microsoft Project file in the dBASE file format, select the file, and click Import.
Microsoft Access will bring up a dialog box that will let you know if there were any errors during the import. Click OK to accept this message. The name of your project should appear in the Table list; if you don't see the name, click Table. To view the information in the Table, select the name of the table from the Table list and click Open.

To import a Lotus WK3 file into Access:

  1. Open your data file in Microsoft Project.
  2. On the File Menu, click Save As.
  3. In the Save File As Type list, click Lotus WK3.
  4. Start Microsoft Access and open an existing database or create a new one.
  5. On the File menu, click Import.
  6. Select Lotus (WK3) as the Data Source.
  7. In the Import Spreadsheet dialog box, make sure that the First Name Contains Field Names option is cleared (is not selected), and then click either Create New Table or Append to Existing Table. To view the imported information, select the name of the Table in the Table list and click Open.
NOTE: Microsoft Project versions 4.0, 4.1 and 98 include tools to save Project files as Database format. This can be done in Project 4.x by pointing to Multiple Projects on the Tools menu, and then clicking Save to Database. In Project 98, click Save As on the File menu, and then click ODBC.
